MBB: Apps blow late lead and fall at the final horn

Unread post by asu66 » Sun Feb 07, 2016 4:20 am

AppDawg left this final comment on the thread about the ASU men's loss to UL-L on Thursday evening. "We just need to put together a complete 40 minutes."

He's right! Yesterday (Saturday afternoon), our kids recovered from another slow start and battled a talented UL-M squad nose-to-nose for 38 minutes and 30 seconds. In the last 1:30, the Apps blew a 5 point lead and lost by 1 when senior J.Eaves missed a jumper from his favorite spot on the floor with the clock under 5 seconds and frosh sensation R.Shabazz clanked a heartbreaking, game-winning dunk off the rim at the buzzer. (A soft snowbird was all that was needed. Freshman mistake. Hopefully, a lesson was learned. It would be a miscarriage of justice, however, to saddle Shabazz with the loss. The guy scored 27 points.)

Once again, defense, or lack of same, was the bottom line. The Warhawks outscored the Apps 36 to 20 in the paint!

Final score...UL-M 91- ASU 90. :(

Thanks, 66. Just like the Southern game a couple weeks ago, in this one you can look at a number of individual plays that woulda coulda shoulda. On this night however, you can point to 1 stat alone that sums it up. We were 68% from the free thow line and ULM was 81%. We need to get better taking the "free" points.

I don't even follow our basketball program as closely as I should and these types of games over the last couple of weeks make me feel nauseous for our guys. I can't imagine how Coach Fox and the team feels.

Hopefully we can make the tournament by finishing in the top eight. This team is getting better and just may be able to figure out how to close out games by season's end. Shabazz (sp?) is going to be special.

Starting to sound like a familiar theme this season.

We are lucky to have Coach Fox, I have no doubt he will turn our program around and the fans will hopefully start pouring in as people see how bright our future can be.

Anyone that thought Fox would challenge for a conference title or postseason birth by this year was unrealistic. Right now this team is inconsistent but improving as they age.

We were a joke six weeks ago. Just being in games right now progress. We're so much closer than I ever thought we'd be this soon in Fox's term.
