Almost as big as at the Miami Sellout

Unread post by McLeansvilleAppFan » Tue Aug 02, 2016 3:49 pm

Neese's now makes livermush. Not sure when this started but it was noticed a few weeks ago. Not as good as Hunter's but very close I think and as good as Jenkin's in this livermush sommelier's view.

Not sure how many stores are carrying this product but it does open up the livermush line farther east than Iredell or Davie county. We discussed the livermush demarcation line a few years ago but I can't remember where the line ended. Short of Greensboro at the time, but not any more!

Speaking as the undisputed authority on these matters, it's Hunter's or it's crap!

Really, I searched high and low in grocery stores and mom and pop convenience stores in Guilford county (Home of Neese's) and never noticed Neese's brand livermush until a few weeks ago. There was a website that mentioned Neese's brand dated September 2015 that was about the broader scrapple/liver pudding/livermush history.

Where were you getting Neese's brand livermush all this time? My mom will bring it from Catawba County when she visits or when I visit her I would pick some up.

To paraphrase Princess Carolyn from Bojack Horseman. "it's like a pile of crap was eaten by a second pile of crap and crapped out a third pile of crap, and the other brands are that third pile of crap."

Liver Mush is a bit more "solid" while liver pudding is a bit more "mush-y" to be honest. Liver mush seems to be a western NC thing, while liver pudding has a wider distribution across NC and maybe neighboring areas. Scrapple is more in the Penn/Delaware area, and Ohio has a goetta. They are all very similar with different filler from corn bread to oats.

I never saw anything but liver pudding in Greensboro until recently. Just not the same to this southern who grew up on liver mush and not liver pudding. My wife from New York state things any of this organ meat food is seriously disgusting, in fact I just asked my mother-in-law whom we are visting with if my wife every ate organ meat and the M-I-L response was "over my dead body."

More for me is my view.

For Neese's only seen Liver Pudding label, but its pretty much livermush.

And I just have to have french's yellow mustard (unless egg on the sandwich as well, then Dukes on egg side, mustard on livermush side).

Liver Mush is not Liver Pudding. Neese's has both products. It's my understanding L M has a higher cornmeal content than L P. I have seen Neese's L P for years here in the Hickory area, but I have never seen their L M. Since I despise liver, I can only handle L M cooked so crispy it has a cracker-like texture. Then I dowse it in plenty of yellow or brown mustard to drown out the liver flavor and pretend I am a connoisseur. My son prefers his L M crispy like me, but on white bread with Duke's mayo. Should I encounter Neese's L M I will give it a try, but Hunter's is our long-standing favorite and will likely remain as such.

I live on Poteat Road in Marion, NC. This is where Hunters Livermush is made. I also enjoy it but when you drive by the plant on a daily basis and smell it, it can get a little old. Marion also has a livermush festival in the fall that is put on by the Hunter family. If you like their products you should attend. They make livermush prepared in every way you could think of and it is free.

My grandma made "real" livermush from scratch on her farm back in the day. Only product that's ever come anywhere close to grandma's is Neese's. It was available in Spencer/Salisbury/Rowan County at least as early as the late 50's. Still on the grocery shelves here in Wilkesboro--Food Lion, Lowe's Foods and at Wally-World.
Proud triple-degree App grad--Classes of '66, '70 and '81.
If it happens to the Apps, it happens to me!
