Bush 41: 90th B'day Sky Dive

Unread post by asu66 » Thu Jun 12, 2014 12:49 pm

Ok, this isn't political and I don't care what anyone says! Former President GHWBush (41) celebrated his 90th birthday with an 11 AM EDT parachute jump over the Maine seacoast earlier today. Oh, that we could be so fortunate and so full of zest for life to live to be 90 and maintain that "greatest generation can do attitude."

KENNEBUNKPORT – Former Pres. George H.W. Bush celebrated his 90th birthday Thursday by skydiving out of a helicopter at his summer home in Kennebunkport.

Bush, who uses a scooter or wheelchair to get around, jumped from the helicopter while tethered to a retired member of the Golden Knights, the Army’s parachute team. He made the jump around 11 a.m. Thursday morning.

“It’s a wonderful day in Maine – in fact, nice enough for a parachute jump,” the nation’s 41st president announced on Twitter.

The announcement was kept secret until the last minute, partly to give Bush himself the option of bagging it. The forecast Thursday called for clouds and scattered showers across the southern Maine coast.

McGrath said Bush likes both a surprise and an adrenaline rush.

“It’s vintage George Bush,” he said. “It’s that passion for life. It’s wanting to set a goal, wanting to achieve it. I’m sure part of it is sending a message to others that even in your retirement years you can still find challenges.”

The first time Bush jumped from an airplane was when his plane was shot down in World War II over the Pacific. Later, he decided to jump from a plane of his own accord and marked his 75th, 80th and 85th birthdays by skydiving.

He said on his 85th birthday that he’d like to do it again on his 90th. Thursday’s jump would be his eighth.

Other birthday festivities included a private dinner with more than 200 relatives and friends, including some from his White House days: press secretary Marlin Fitzwater, White House counsel Boyden Gray and political director Ron Kaufman, McGrath said. His children, including former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, will be there, McGrath said.

Kennebunkport is a special place for the president. As a boy, he visited the family home at Walker’s Point every summer, except during World War II. The retreat was later dubbed his “summer White House.”

During his presidential years, Bush was known for jogging, tennis and fast-paced golf but now uses a wheelchair or scooter because of a form of parkinsonism that has robbed him of use of his legs.

“He’s lost his mobility, but he hasn’t lost his heart. He’s still the genuine person that we’ve come to cherish,” said Ken Raynor, a friend and pro at the Cape Arundel Golf Club.

While his activities are now limited, Bush still fulfills his need for speed on his boat, Fidelity. “He’s always loved going fast. He loves the speed. He loves the adrenaline,” McGrath said.

Jon Meacham, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian who is writing a book about Bush, said the former president is used to being in motion, so it isn’t easy for him to slow down.

The president feels lucky nonetheless, Meacham said.

“He had a remarkable great run of good health and good family and good friends,” he said. “So I know his chief view of life at 90 is one of immense gratitude. He’s very grateful for his parents, he’s grateful for Barbara, he’s grateful for his kids. He knows he’s one of the luckiest guys who ever lived, really.”

Not sure I would jump out of a perfectly good plane with OJ Simpson strapped to my back.

Chuck, that reminds me of during one of his campaigns when a guest on one of the PBS radio shows ridiculed Bush for being shot down by the Japs in WW II, saying he must have not been a very good pilot. The host has to this date not apologized for the guest's comment.

It might be you are imaging this or maybe it happened. But PBS is TV and NPR is radio. And there are a few other public networks as well -Pacifica, APM.

I listen to and or watch both. I was referring to NPR, and accidently said PBS. It was the show that was hosted by Diane Rheems' predecessor. I listen to PBS in the mornings religiously for a couple hours each day and again for almost an hour on my 45 minute trip home each night. I dial back and forth from the 4 different NC PBS stations but mostly WFAE and often the one in Chapel Hill itself...91.1 I believe.

FWIW, I sympathize with Diane Rheems (sp) Parkinson like illness, but still her shaky voice grates on my nerves. PBS is good to her by keeping her on, but obviously she wouldn't last a day on commercial radio.

You are still concerned about a host of a radio talk show who has not apologized for a remark made by a guest on the program in the campaign of either the 1988 or 1992 elections?

NO OF COURSE NOT!!!!!!!!! That was a figure of speech not meant to be taken literally. I don't even remember who the host was. All I know is it was either before Diane Rheems or she was being replaced that day by a guess host. Any host with half a brain and an ounce of civility would have corrected the guest. Being shot down by a Japanese fighter pilot says nothing about the competence of Bush the older or most any pilot.

It might be you are imaging this or maybe it happened. But PBS is TV and NPR is radio. And there are a few other public networks as well -Pacifica, APM.
Did you mean "imagining" in place of " imaging?" I was not imagining anything. It happened just as much as I am sitting in front of this computer keyboard. After hearing that, I made myself a promise that I wouldn't ever listen to another NPR broadcast...and didn't for months. Needless to say, I broke that promise and starting listening again a few months later and continue to listen to this very day in spite of the obvious anti-conservative slant it takes, especially when Diane hosts. Hell, she still mentions George W. Bush almost daily.

"Ok, this isn't political and I don't care what anyone says! Former President GHWBush (41) celebrated his 90th birthday with an 11 AM EDT parachute jump over the Maine seacoast earlier today. Oh, that we could be so fortunate and so full of zest for life to live to be 90 and maintain that 'greatest generation can do attitude.'"

Well, Chuck, so much for this thread not being political...nice try, though.

It shouldn't have been. I applaud any 90 year-old who has the guts and the ability to skydive at that age. That's what this was originally about and should have continued to be about.

Sorry, but OJ's on a 30+ year permanent vacation in a secure prison deep in the Nevada desert. :D At age 66 and in poor health, he's not likely to get out alive.

The guy you speak of is a U. S. Secret Service agent and a former US Army Golden Knight. Methinks that's about as secure as sky-diving can get!
