The Young Joe Paterno - A Better Memory

Unread post by sugarapp » Fri Aug 24, 2012 6:15 pm

Many of you may have knowledge of Mike Reid, former Penn State LB great, Heisman finalist, College Football POY, several times All-Pro for the Bengals in the 1970's, and concert pianist. Mike left football at the height of his pro career to build a career in country music in Nashville and has done quite well earning a spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame for penning numerous hits. Because he was such an unusual combination of athlete and musician, I have had an interest in him since I was a kid and have been searching unsuccessfully for a particular Sports illustrated photo stuck in my memory for decades of Mike in a Penn State uniform sitting at a grand piano (I may very well be imagining this but I can see the image in my mind's eye). As I searched the SI archives today I read this article:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/ ... /index.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Reminded me of the unorthodox coaching of Joe Paterno and the seeming innocence of college football in that era. Thought it was a more pleasant memory of Joe that others may be interested in reading.

PS If anyone remembers the photo for which I search please help me confirm my sanity!
