Help Needed - Calling all NC Resident

Unread post by /\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 » Sat Oct 01, 2016 5:51 pm

My wife and I are over where we currently live. We would like to move to either the Winston Salem area or Charlotte area. Any suggestions on jobs/companies in those areas? I have 6 years banking experience, with more than 3 of those years in a supervisory role. My wife works with correspondence and communication editing. Our combined income is over $100k and would like to keep income close to where we are at currently. Currently live in Northern Virginia.

ANY help would be amazing. Thanks to everyone in advance.

BB&T is based out of Winston. Wells Fargo and BOA also have pretty regional office in the downtown area as well. I'm not sure if it would be any use to you in the terms of your skills but Novant Health and Wake Forest are the two big (huge) medical systems in the area.

Other big companies you might want to check out would be RJR, Lowes Foods (Headquartered there) and Piedmont Federal Savings Bank (also HQ'd there).

And finally, maybe check out Piedmont Airlines Credit Union

Hope that helps.

Truliant Federal Credit Union (formally AT&T Credit Union) is also headquartered in Winston. As for Charlotte, Bank of America is headquartered there, it is Wells Fargo's east coast headquarters and BB&T has a big presence. Also TIAA CREF has a large operation in Charlotte.

My better half is a Realtor in the Mooresville / Lake Norman area ( Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson ). She also can help with the Concord / Kannapolis and University area. She'd be happy to help with your housing needs.

We live in Winston and there are definitely a fair number of jobs in your field, though I'm a little less certain about hers.

In addition to all of the banks mentioned above, Allegacy Credit Union is also HQ'ed in Winston, and while I heard First Tennessee was moving its regional HQ to Raleigh, I understand they're still maintaining a significant presence in Winston.

And as far as the other major employers go, for your wife's sake, many have been mentioned, but I'd also consider HanesBrands and Krispy Kreme, both HQ'ed in Winston, and perhaps the local colleges (WFU, WSSU, UNCSA, Salem College), and, as mentioned before, the hospitals. Both WFU Baptist and Novant Forsyth are massive and employ people in lots of fields: not exclusively healthcare providers.

Have you visited both? We love Winston-Salem, but it's definitely a little more quaint than Charlotte or NOVA. Obviously. I mean, there's plenty to do, and it's perfect for us, but we're a few years older than you and have kids. As my username indicates, I lived in a big city for a good while, and I find the quality of life much higher in WSNC, but there are those random moments I'm craving Ethiopian food or something that I'm reminded that it's a midsized city.

Charlotte is the nation's 2nd largest financial center, so there are a few banks here.

My brother and father live in Charlotte. Very familiar with Charlotte. Winston not so much. I am interested in either with the right career opportunity. My wife loves the Concord area, but we are open to options. We know we don't want to live inside the beltway in Charlotte, and really any area of Winston would be great. Thank you for the info.

I grew up in Winston until college, and have now lived in Charlotte for almost 12 tears. If you want a more laid back life with easier access to things then Winston is the choice. If you like a big city with more to offer, and don't mind a LOT more traffic then Charlotte is the way to go. The towns outside of Charlotte offer more laid back living, but working in banking you'll be driving into the city and dealing with traffic on a daily basis. I've gotten use to it, but it still isn't fun. There is a lot to do here though, and I'm assuming you're younger based off your name here so that might appeal more to you. Having said that I wouldn't hesitate to move back to Winston if work/life called for it.

That's fair. I would add (and I'm sure you know this, JT) that Winston has changed a fair bit in 12 years. But then again, so has Charlotte.

But if you aren't interested in living in Charlotte proper, ASG09, that could give an edge to Winston. Not only could the smaller city be a plus, less traffic and smaller geographic footprint means you can get from office downtown to an area that might better suit your needs.

I grew up in Winston and lived there after college, nice area. Moved to the Lake Norman area, Cornelius then to Mooresville, almost 20 years ago to work for First Union/Wachovia/Wells Fargo. Love the Mooresville area, great schools, lots to do and can be in Winston or Charlotte in 45 - 60 minutes. Most important is I can get from home to stadium lot tailgate in about an hour and a half! The Charlotte CATS bus does offer some good commuting options. I catch a bus in Davidson and it drops me off within a block of my office. Cost is about $5 or $6 a day, which is much cheaper then parking, gas and wear and tear on the car. CATS also has express buses that run from Concord and the University area as well as most of the outlying towns around Charlotte.
