U of Akron cutting school by half
OUCH! The university of Akron announced due to revenue lost over Coronavirus that they’re cutting 6 of its 11 colleges (departments, not satellite campuses) and reducing athletic budget by 20%.

Lots of organizations that have been looking to downsize will take this as an opportunity to do so under the cover of Covid.

Re: U of Akron cutting school by half
The MAC was in deep shit prior to COVID. I posted about their declining enrolment figures back in December.
Akron
Ball State
Eastern Michigan
Bowling Green
Central Michigan
Northern Illinois
Send those 6 back to FCS.
The MAC had TWO guys drafted. From the whole conference.
I’d be willing to bet my hat that they are among us the first shoe to drop.
I foresee a future where a new MAC emerges sans half its members looking south for teams.
NORTH: Western Michigan. Buffalo. Toledo. Kent State. Ohio. Miami Ohio.
SOUTH: Marshall. James Madison. Western Kentucky. App State. UAB. Stink.
Aka “Return of the MAC”

I think this just shows that a lot of higher education institutions have been playing with house money and not worried about fiscal efficiency. The second that the revenue stream of students with massive loans dries up, the administrative bloat comes home to roost. Does a college need a full time dean and administrative staff to manage only 4 degrees? Probably not.

If/when it occurs I hope the newly aligned conference does not retain any of the old names. I don’t want to be in Conference USA nor MAC.

Re: U of Akron cutting school by half
MAC schools who don't drop down will have to roam the independent wilderness for a while. I've read a bunch of message boards threads from CUSA and Sunbelt fans at CSNbbs and NOBODY wants to be associated with those schools...not even Marshall who spent its early FBS years as a member wants them around.

Re: U of Akron cutting school by half
I have zero desire to leave the SunBelt for CUSA but if there were a re-organization I wouldn't have a problem landing in a conference called Conference USA. There's still a bit of recognition associated with the name that hasn't been totally destroyed. Nothing about the MAC (Mid-American Conference) would benefit us. They have no name recognition and the name doesn't fit the region where we are located.

To clarify, I don’t mind moving to a regional conference. CUSA still leaves a bad taste I don’t want to be associated with.
