Crime in the UNCC area is an unfortunate reality that has existed for many years. It’s not as bad as some people make out but when your in the area you have to be aware of your surroundings.

The light rail will not make it worse. There will be a police officer at the two UNCC stations during all hours of operation and video surveillance. Anyone coming into campus will be easily identified.

It’s far more likely that anyone up to no good will take the light rail to other areas so it might actually siphon some miscreants out of the area.

Long term it will help the situation as long as the expected development occurs.

Some of the development done in the last couple of years at the first UNCC station has been disappointing. It’s not off to a great start. (Speaking specifically about the retail area right next to the station with Blaze Pizza) That could have be developed with housing and ground level retail and been one of the hottest locations in town due to proximity to the station, University Place, the hospital, UNCC, library, additional retail in both directions. All walkable.
