Pizza

I love Village Inn Pizza. I wished they had a restaurant closer to the Triad than Statesville.

Maybe I would not completely engorge myself in such an unhealthy manner if I knew I could have this pizza a bit more often than I do, which has been a few times a year since I moved away from that side of the state. Of course having a restaurant in Boone would not hurt my feelings, though I am not sure if it would compete with Pepper's since that is the only place for a Jean Lawson.

I used to think that Murphy's had the best pizza in town, but now I'd have to say Carolina Pizza Company (In the old Capone's spot). Everything has been great, from their GIANT lunch slices to the several specialty pies that I've tried.

I work about a quarter mile from a Village Inn and other than the buffet I don't think it would stand a chance in Boone. There are several other options to get a better pizza AND enjoy a beer along side it.

I do think Village Inn is an acquired taste. I just really like the super thin crispy crackeresque type crust.

I always liked Papa's Pizza which was very close to VI pizza in taste and the thin crispy crust. Papa's was closer to home growing up so we did that pizza parlor most often unless we were in Hickory near the old Sky City. When Papa's moved out of Conover some years ago to Myrtle Beach I was a bit upset, but VI, thankfully, moved right in, and I was only getting either pizza when I visited mom or dad.

Then the VI closed in Conover so it was only passing through Statesville during supper time that I would get the occasional VI pie. When the original closed I did not at first know they had moved a bit south on I-77. I knew some other VI locations existed but nothing convenient.

For the next three years, I can either visit the I-77 Statesville location or the Salisbury location on my way to Davidson and with a daughter in Granite Falls I can drop in to either Statesville location on the way back home or have lunch in the Lenoir location.

I have never found pizza like this anywhere. That crust...

Which VI did you visit on Friday's after class?

There is still a Village Inn in Salisbury. Still pretty decent.

I guess the one in Lenoir is just substandard compared to the rest of the VI's (like everything else in the town).

You beat me to the punch here. Speedy's and Yogi's were staples and the best!

To this day, Yogis had the best subs that I have ever had and had pickles to die for.

The place before Capone's at the same location in '98 was awesome. I think it was Ferrara's or something like that.

Yes, across from the Salisbury Mall. I thought it good.

I jump off I-85 and proceed to commit the sin of gluttony and then take some back roads to Davidson.

The last time I was there I jumped up at the same time a hot pie came out of the oven and a woman slightly older then myself and I hit the bar at the same time. Chivalry be damned, I told her I drove over an hour to get some pizza and would she mind if I went first. Thankfully I did not need to resort to violence

Is the big mall in Salisbury now shuttered?

It looked to either be that shuttered or close to it. Of course when I was passing through and realized what it was it may have been off hours. They have a website that seems active however.
