RIP Frank Robinson

Unread post by goapps » Thu Feb 07, 2019 3:23 pm

Hall of Famer and former triple crown winner Frank Robinson has passed away. He hit the only home run to ever land outside the old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. He and Johnny Unitas were my first two childhood sports heroes.

Just read that. Wasn't he the first MLB player to win a series in both leagues? Seems like it was Baltimore and Cincinnati.
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

I think he was the first to win MVP awards in both leagues with the Reds and Orioles

Robinson never won a World Series in the NL when he was with Cincinnati. The one time the Reds won the pennant with Robinson on their roster was in 1961. They lost the World Series to the Noo Yawk Yankees 4 games to 1. He went onto win two World Series with the Orioles after being traded there for a legendary pitcher named Milt Pappas.

My understanding is that he is the only player to win MVP in both leagues.

I believe he is still the only one to ever do it.

Saw him first as a Cincinnati Red LEG --- he hit a long home run out of Crosley Field over the left field wall and broke out a window in an old building --- By the way, he hit it off Warren Spahn - ah, the good old days :o

I remember in 1969 our family drove to the mid-west for vacation and we passed Crosley Field prior to it being razed and replaced with Riverfront Stadium.

Just saw this on de tube. I'll choose to remember him as a CincyRed. He could do it all...with the exception of the many times he had to face Koufax, Drysdale and Podres and the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers. RIP, Big Frank.

By the way, FR was the first Afro-American manager in MLB.

Really fine man. He coached in the Puerto Rico winter leagues where I grew up. He would come down to the basketball court near my house and shoot around with us kids. Rest In Peace.
