Boston Celtic all-time leading scorer John "Hondo" Havlicek died today. He was a part of one of the greatest Celtics mystique as related by announcer Johnny Most: "Havlicek stole the ball! Havlicek stole the ball!"

A true sports legend. I still believe that Game 5 in the 1976 NBA Championship against Phoenix was the best pro basketball game ever.

Re: RIP "Hondo" Havilcek
I remember the night as I was in the old Office Lounge in downtown Salisbury with some friends. The place was watching the game on a couple TV's and as the 4th quarter wound down everyone was acting like we were watching a heavyweight title fight from back in the 30's and 40's. Half the bar was pro-Phoenix and the other half was pro-Boston. Back and forth, cheering every basket, into the overtimes and it was a phenomenal atmosphere. With Cowens fouled out it was even more exciting because role players off the bench had to make plays.MAD Doctor wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2019 10:34 amA true sports legend. We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

I remember him also. He had the unenviable job of replacing Russell once he retired. Replacing Russell was like replacing John Wooden after he retired but ol' Henry did a pretty good job.
