This WHS team will be the best team ever assembled in Watauga. Including the championship team of 77' or 78'??
I would bet the house that they will be in the state championship game. The heart of the team were juniors last year. They had a chance to do it without Bryce but this will really help the depth this team has. Ryan Habbick is a superb coach and we are lucky to have him in Boone. He would be humble and say they wont make it the championship game but I think deep down he knows they have a shot. It is really good football to watch on Friday nights locally!

Nice to see. I remember his face in the photos of them leaving. Glad he gets to finish.
None of them were happy. Serious question on Bryce. I know a lot of people buzzed at how dominate he was and speculated that maybe dad would bring him to App before he left. My question is are there any FBS caliber players in their league or on the team? I remember it is to be labeled as a league with a bunch of slow, undersized players but I have not seen or tracked HS ball in Boone in a few years. Is he playing against any legit D1 guys or mostly dominating D2 or or a bunch of guys who won't play past high school?
Speaking for HS ball in Boone, it has been very good over the past few seasons. Last season Watauga won their Conference (Northwestern 4A/3A) and two playoff games (lost to eventual State Champ in third round). They ended the season with a 13-1 record. This season is predicted to be much like the past few. Therefore, slow and undersized is no longer the norm.
That is good to hear. I was hoping that the players are bigger and faster than they use to be.

If their recent scrimmage against Maiden is any indicator, this season's Watauga team has a long way to go before even being compared to the 1978 version. They had better get focused and fast or I don't even see them winning their conference, time will tell.

I love everything about him coming home to Watauga and getting to play his senior season with his best friends. Parent knows they would do everything possible to figure out a way to make this work for their kids.

As for WHS' competitiveness in 4A football, please stop. They're a slightly above average 4A team. They wouldn't finish more than .500 in ANY 4A conference off the mountain. You can't count winning records in these combination 3A/4A conferences. Its a great high school and they do a lot with the talent they have in the area, but they are not someone who is going to see the championship game.

I heard the #2 QB and a starting OL for Watauga were involved in a mult-car accident last week. First and foremost, I hope these young men heal quickly and their injuries are minor. A person's health and well being will always outweigh anything related to sports, get well soon men.

Regarding the Maiden scrimmage, I hear Watauga's starting QB was ejected from the game on a penalty (early on). Therefore, Watauga competed with a 3rd string QB. Point being, when you're already down key players, stupid penalties are something you can ill afford. Although they struggled overall, this scrimmage should serve as a lesson. If they can stay focused they should be good. Otherwise............ To be continued:

My brother is married to Jimmy Flick's sister. Flick (aka "skin flick", lol) is still around and doing well. I remember watching the 78 team, my brother and I didn't miss a game. I had just gotten out of the Air Force and was attending Lees-McRae (I later transferred to App, LMC was a two year school back in those days). Friday Night Lights, Memories. By the way, we used to refer to the 78 team as "The Cardiac Kids", :)

This the best football team Watauga has ever had on the field. No disrespect to the 78' team but the 2019 version is stacked and extremely well coached.
Sat. Had like a 130 yds rushing in the first quarter not to mention scoring an 80 yd kickoff return in the first seconds of the game.

This team is damn good and the score easily could have been double.

As long as they stay healthy it will be hard to stop Watauga this season. With that said, a tougher schedule, no bye week, 11 straight games, and little depth does concern me. By the way, I see where Alexander Central beat Hibriten last night. Looks like the Watauga/Alexander Central game could be for the conference title.

Too bad Scott wont be there to see his son's senior season, but he certainly has a few million good reasons.

After tonight the 1977 team will remain the best team in WHS history.

Averaging over 40 points a game on offense. Why are you always so d--n negative?.

Another reason not to have left yet.

He's a Cardinal not a Mountaineer nor Pioneer. Period.

Just calling it the way it is, the 1977 team was undefeated. This year's team is very good, should win the rest of their regular season games. By the way, why are you always a jack ass?

77 team will hold a better record but 2019 team would crush them head to head.

Without a reliable defense from this year's team and the "killer instinct" of the 77 team, I'd say your comment is debatable. The current team may win, however, no way would they crush the 77 team.
