Book Burning at Stinks

A Latina author who was invited to discuss diversity had some students burning her books after she answered questions about white privilege in an exchange that got heated between students. Way to go Stink... but you are in South Georgia so why would I be surprised.

In before thread locked or hidden in the political folder!

Book burnings are pretty disgusting but, while I dislike hard-core right and left wingers, unless the author was physically assaulted like the right wing speakers were at Middlebury and Cal Berkeley and elsewhere, this (sadly in this day and age) is a non-story

So what’s the difference between South Georgia and North Carolina?

Did they buy the books first? Because nothing tells an author where to stick it quite like giving them your money before making a political statement.

They were just mad because they didn’t know how to read it

They’re likely mad because they weren’t born with a silver spoon in their mouth, parents were maybe lower middle class, they’ve worked hard to get into college and someone is telling them how the world is handed to them. The biggest advantage they have is a family that supports them regardless of color.

Everyone comes into this world with advantages and disadvantages, successful people overcome the bad. There is no where in the world which this is more true.

White privilege-Affirmative action. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Sounds like something UNC folks would say about App folks.

Rhetorical question: In the United States would you rather be born white or a person of color? It’s not 6 of one or half dozen of another.

Take your virtue signaling elsewhere.
Ga southern can’t complete a sentence about App without accusing us of relations with goats. Obviously It was a joke. Relax.

Not really sure what “virtue signaling” is. I just don’t care for hypocrites. It was a joke when the UNC students chanted “safety school”. It was also a joke when they picked on the fat guy from Clemson. I’m fine with a good joke, just don’t get all bent out of shape when the folks from Chapel Hill call us a bunch of stupid, toothless hillbilly’s

I don’t. It makes beating them that much sweeter

There is a big difference between us joking and trash talking with GASo and the UNC arrogance and condescending attitude toward us and other schools.

Sincere question, what’s the difference? I’ve lived in NC my whole life and I would really like to be proud of UNC Chapel Hill. But I’m not because when I think of UNC all II think about is arrogance. That’s sad because I know there are plenty of good folks who work at, and have graduated from UNC. I don’t want us to get that kind of reputation.

Just to be born here is good enough for me and by the grace of God it happened.

Regardless of color, creed, ethnicity, orientation etc., a strong work ethic, good morals and being able to persevere will raise a person up.

Either/or.

I lived a great life. I had both parents. We had money. I went to a private school. My mom and dad paid for my time at Appalachian. I had it made. I realize God blessed me with that and to whom much is given much is expected. I have also seen those with nothing come up and have more than I do. I'm all for leveling the playing field to give eveyone a fair shake at the American dream..... Where we screw up is thinking that an equal start means an equal finish.

We can argue the reality of white privilege all we want. The point I think that we should focus on here is the ignorance of a group of GaSo students. Higher education is supposed to be a place of learning, in which young adults are challenged both by rigorous courses and new ideas that compete with their preconceived notions. A Latina author came to the school and offered her opinion. Some students didn’t like her opinion, so they burned her book. Not only is this ignorant, but in the land of free speech, it’s un-American.

Aristotle said, “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” Sounds like there aren’t many educated minds in Statesboro.

Just speaking for myself and my 70+ years on this earth - anytime I hear or read about "book burnings", I think Nazis. If you know history you will know why I say that ---

Nazis were the government. At GSU, they weren't the government.
