We're in an era though that the college game is having a massive influence on the NFL level. Change is coming from the bottom up instead of the top down. That's probably why these old-hat NFL guys are having a tough time being successful with the concepts and athletes coming out of college.

Not a fan of that hire, but hope I'm wrong.
Why wouldn't you be? He turned a 1 win team into an 11 win team. It's a perfect fit for him also without the pressure of being in New York. What's the alternative, a re-tread NFL guy?
I have no skin in the game regarding the Panthers, but a seven year deal? That seems crazy to me.
Who cares about the length of and amount of his contract. The dude writing his check is a gazillion air.

Yeah not sure why any of you care about the length or value of the contract lol. Not your money and Tepper has no shortage of cash. And if it goes bad Tepper can terminate as soon as he wishes. As others have mentioned, he was doing something right to complete the turnaround jobs at Temple and Baylor that he did. If you have concerns about the college to NFL jump then that’s fine but there’s enough of a track record to believe Rhule can be pretty successful in Carolina.

True. But Tepper didn’t make his fortune making bad business decisions. Again, it isn’t my money and I don’t really care how he chooses to spend it. The length of the contract, especially for a guy that has zero NFL experience is a bit jaw dropping. Gruden got a 10 year deal from the Raiders. At least he has a SB ring.

Also to add some local-ish info. Rhule was at Western from 02-05.

So why are you assuming this is a bad business decision if his entire $12 billion fortune is from making good business decisions? Obviously the man heard/saw something that he believes justifies his decision.

Ease up Karen. I’m not trashing your owner or your new coach. I just made a comment on the length of the guaranteed contract. Sorry to ruffle your feathers with such an innocuous comment.

Except Spurrier didn’t take over two complete dumpster fires and get them to 10 wins in 3 years. I can argue Rhule’s resume all day, it’s damn impressive. Whether the success transfers remains to be seen but there’s no way you can objectively say it’s a mistake of a hire at this point.

I simply asked a question? So soft.

Also, do you think a coach is going to take a pay cut to come to the NFL from college? If you’re going to go grab what are considered elite college coaches you’re going to have to pay them more what they are making in college. Unless you wanted to give him $20M a year for a 4 year deal then going 7 years is the only way to do it.

I agree with you. His resume says he can turn things around in 2-3 seasons and it appears Tepper is wanting a 2-3 year rebuild. Baylor was a dumpster fire and he got the most out of them within 3 years, pretty impressive.

As a Panther fan I will be WAY more concerned if they give Cam a new 5 year $150M guaranteed contract. Couldn't care less about the length of the coaching contracts. Those can go away with zero hit to the cap.

I think if we can find an affordable way to kick the tires on Cam for another season or two, you do it. As we have seen, you can’t just put the flavor of the month under center and expect to win. Defensive Coordinators just need a little bit of film to negate an average QB. A healthy Cam offers too many ways to hurt NFL defenses. The guy took these receivers to the super bowl- Bersin, Ginn, Cotchery, and downtown Philly Brown. 15-1, 60% comp, and 35 TDs..... so STUPID how good of a season that was,

That was a great season but the problem is that Newton has not been healthy and hasn't shown to be that good since then. Maybe Rhule can get that out of him but if he can get healthy and get back to form you keep that guy. If he can't stay healthy I would draft someone to push him and let them sit behind Cam for a couple years.

Cam Newton makes people stupid.
Those were opinion pieces and he has been good at times but he can't stay healthy. He has either missed time or played hurt. The ESPN.com piece was in October. That is just halfway through the year. Remember, the most important ability is availability.

Here is the most important link that matters with his numbers each year: http://www.nfl.com/player/camnewton/2495455/careerstats

As you can see, he has been a good player but not great player outside of that 2015 season.
There has been talk of him being let go, which I would not do yet, because they still won without him some when that Kyle Allen took over.

He is not even considered top 10 in the NFL now. I would take Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Jimmy G, Rodgers, Watson, Matt Ryan, etc over him right now.

His draft position and being talked about so much by the talking heads is what makes people cloud his true value. Don't ever use SB Nation and ESPN opinion pieces as a fact source to back up an opinion. LOL. You can look at the stats this year and the facts don't back up that he is a great QB over the last 5 years. He is solid but not great. A little overrated based on general public opinion.

I’m not a Dallas fan, and I absolutely detest Jerry Jones, but he didn’t make it on bad business decisions either... Johnson and Switzer are “his” only 2 coaches to bring home SB rings. Both came from college...

Point taken but that wasn’t the crux of my comment. I just think that a 7 year contract is rather lengthy and $60 million in guaranteed scratch is a lot to poney up for a guy with no NFL HC experience. Not questioning Ruhle’s abilities and it’s Tepper’s money to spend anyway he wants. Ala Daniel Snyder. Hope it ends up better for the Panther fans than what Redskins fans have to deal with.

Cam (or any other QB) will never stay healthy behind that line. It's as simple as that. The personnel management for the Panthers has been so terrible for so many years that it will truly take 2-3 (or more) to fix it. Until they can pass block, they will continue to struggle.

Give 'em hell!
