These topics are good for creating a discussion but they are, by definition, impossible to create with any degree of reliability. Tastes range and there are just too many styles to be represented in a list of 5. Any discussion of the greatest Rock Songs would certainly have to include:
Stairway to Heaven and/or Freebird (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
There are just too many to try to reduce.

My personal style would have to include Carry On Wayward Son (Kansas)

I don't think I could reduce my own personal list down to 5 and I'm sure that if I did, it wouldn't be representative of the population.

I'm with Yosef84 on this is just impossible to boil down to five but it is a fun exercise. For me in the moment and off the cuff my five would be (in no order):
All along the watchtower-Hendrix
Come Together-Beatles
Come as you are-Nirvana
Hotel California- Eagles
Money- Pink Floyd

Those are all great tunes. Very difficult to narrow it down to five and if you ask me again tomorrow I may give a different list but here goes:

Such lists evoke as many deeply personal memories, experiences, emotions and values as there are people who have lived or are now living in the so-called "rock era." Polling such a "top five" is somewhat akin to herding New York City's population of feral cats. Can't be done!

One of my picks was Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith. Prior to the 80s they were a fairly decent band. However, once the 80s came around they went to hell in a hand basket. When they were producing decent tunes (70s), it was base player Tom Hamilton and guitarist Joe Perry who made the band not Tyler!! (as evidenced in the tune Sweet Emotion) Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Tyler is a showman, not unlike David Lee Roth. Could they be replaced and still be successful, based on musicianship of the band? Sure. Van Halen proved it. Hagar was a good frontman, but Van Hagar couldn’t hold a candle to Van Roth on stage. I’d argue the same for Aerosmith had Tyler left the band and they got a capable lead singer.

Yep, the 80’s was pretty much a bad time for rock music with bands like Aerosmith headed more toward the pop side of things. But one of America’s best live bands, The Black Crows, got started in 1984. While others headed down the road to pop music the Crowe’s went straight back to the beginnings of Rock and Roll, to the blues. If you’ve never really listened to the Crows theirs a lot more than Shake your Money Maker. In the later years the guys came very close to blue grass.
