Trevor Lawrence just got my respect

Unread post by Neer86 » Mon Aug 10, 2020 6:15 pm

I don't know anything about the guy other than he's a dang good quarterback. But I just saw what he said yesterday, and the young man makes a hell of a good point about playing football this fall. Right or wrong, I think he stated his case very intelligently, and I admire him for that.

"People are at just as much, if not more risk, if we don't play," the junior signal-caller wrote earlier Sunday. "Players will all be sent home to their own communities where social distancing is highly unlikely and medical care and expenses will be placed on the families if they were to contract COVID-19. Not to mention the players coming from situations that are not good for them/ their future and having to go back to that. Football is a safe haven for so many people.

"We are more likely to get the virus in everyday life than playing football. Having a season also incentivizes players being safe and taking all of the right precautions to try to avoid contracting covid because the season/ teammates safety is on the line. Without the season, as we've seen already, people will not social distance or wear masks and take the proper precautions."

As crazy as it sounds Trevor Lawrence may end up being the person who saved college football this fall. He was very vocal, and the rest of the country followed his lead.

Can’t remember who it was, but one sports reporter said some of these players have shown more leadership than any of the actual leaders and administrators throughout this process.

I also hope he and the other athletes can save college football - he has always since coming onto the scene comported himself as a top-notch young man - I also respect him for being one of the first to take a stand on BLM...

Sports Talk radio is discussing how this may be the beginning of the unionization of college sports, loosely speaking of course. May be an interesting long term view if those in leadership misstep as they navigate this process. Whichever path they choose, there will be supporters, as well as those who are unhappy. Glad I'm not having to make the call.

I really want to see some college football this fall, and to that end, I love what Trevor Lawrence has to say. The leaders in our country are faced with a real challenge because they are forced to paint with a very broad brush. It makes it difficult to fine tune decisions for specific situations. Sometimes these perspectives need to come from "within." Even a coach could come under criticism for making remarks that appeared to be financially motivated. Hearing this perspective from a player carries more weight than from any other source. Whether it influences anything or not, I appreciate him sharing this perspective.

It was enjoyable reading what Trevor had to say, but how in the world are we fans safer without immersing ourselves in a sea of 30,000 to 90,000 fans in a stadium butt to butt, shoulder to shoulder?

Sure does even though I disagree with his stance. What year is he...Jr, Sr?

I believe his bigger focus was on the players being better cared for at school than going back to their respective homes , many of which are not the best.

Had not thought of that but it just depends on how crowded and contagious the hood is.

That is what people forget. There are many children who only eat two meals a deal because of school. They don't eat dinner and are given more love at school than home. That is a big reason why many want to go to school. Same here. These players will have better care and a better chance to stay Covid free if they are at football facilities. It is much easier to keep them isolated somewhat if they are at football facilities and perhaps given a tutor and do classes online rather than go to classes with 50 or 100 people. They also need to stay away from parties. Lawrence is actually right.

Well wouldn't the players remain on campus for their classes either in person or virtually?

Many will, which is kind of my point in another thread. If they are still going to be on or around campus, what type of things are in place to protect them from catching it? Nothing is the answer. At least in the team setting, there are proven effective safety measures that have been put in place to slow/spread infections.

"Dr. Cameron Wolfe, a Duke infectious disease specialist, told Sports Business Daily that doctors have learned enough over the past six months to manage the risk.
"We believe we can mitigate it down to a level that makes everyone safe," Wolfe told The Daily. "Can we safely have two teams meet on the field? I would say yes. Will it be tough? Yes. Will it be expensive and hard and lots of work? For sure. But I do believe you can sufficiently mitigate the risk of bringing COVID onto the football field or into the training room at a level that's no different than living as a student on campus." ESPN

I am not making any prognostications about the remaining conferences or any of that. All i am saying is that there are plenty of college football players on twitter saying that Trevor Lawrence and the other high profile guys don’t speak for them, in regards to them wanting to play. Pretty disingenuous to get a hard on about what Trevor is saying but totally ignore other players who’s feelings/thoughts are just as valid. Unless you can only respect folks who you agree with, which i can acknowledge is pretty common these days.

I want to watch football this fall as much as anyone and if the leagues believe they can do it safely then good. But there is no way in hell you can say a bunch of sweaty guys basically bear hugging each other, spitting, yelling in each other’s faces and bleeding is safer than just being a regular student. The only way it’s even remotely safer is if teams, coaches and staff are quarantined and only come into contact with each other. Now does anyone believe you can lock a bunch of 18-22 year old men up for 4 months? Again, I want them play but let’s not pretend because a young man that’s good at playing football says it’s safe we should all pile in. The devil is in the details of the Duke feller’s statement and I bet you the devil is teams quarantining.

Who has a hard on for Trevor Lawrence as you so eloquently stated? I think people were merely saying he showed one compelling angle toward the treatment of the players who stated they wanted to play. If kids don’t to play they don’t have to. Your tone is weirdly aggressive. And who is only respecting people they agree with? It’s such a dynamic and fluid situation that honestly people don’t have the answers to. If your stance is no games it’s too dangerous then that’s fine, others may not feel that way. But does that not make you guilty of not doing the very thing you are accusing others of not doing? Not respecting a different point of view?
