Bob Gibson Passes of Pancreatic Cancer
Certain ones will say I'm padding my posts, but I couldn't help recognizing this great MLB pitcher:
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/300 ... ce-dies-84
Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Gibson died Friday at age 84, the St. Louis Cardinals confirmed to ESPN.
Gibson, who was born in Omaha, Nebraska, played all of his 17 MLB seasons with the Cardinals from 1959 through 1975.
He announced in July 2019 that he had pancreatic cancer.
The nine-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion earned 251 wins, struck out 3,117 and had a 2.91 ERA and was known as a fierce competitor who rarely smiled.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner was named the World Series MVP in the Cardinals' 1964 and 1967 championship seasons. He was the National League MVP in 1968.
Woops, just noticed someone else beat me to it. My apologies, but at least a diff source as of 6:59 am

Mentioned this in another post but Bob Gibson was truly an all time great. Such and intimidating force on the mound and great big game pitcher. Also, played hoops for the Harlem Globe Trotters in ‘57-‘58 and was a roommate of Meadowlark Lemon when the trotters were more than just a show/exhibition team. Wilt Chamberlain was a member in 1958 too. Cool stuff

Yeah, you were in another folder on this forum and I didn't check it until after I posted. Thanks for adding.
Had no idea Bob was that versatile. Saw the Globetrotters a couple or three times. One was at App. Tremendous athletes and fabulous showmen. Can't help but wonder how Meadowlark would have done in the NBA.

Re: Bob Gibson Passes of Pancreatic Cancer
Bob Gibson was one of the hardest and best competitors ever. There's a story I heard once that he was struggling a bit on the bump and Tim McCarver called time and went to the mound. When he got there it's said that Gibby looked at him and said, "What the hell are you doing out here? Get your ass back behind the plate!"
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

This. This is what is so frustrating. Nobody is going to accuse you of padding posts for posting a subject like this. Please, just give it a rest.

They have many times just because I posted a topic that was already in another thread, no matter what the subject. Now I will give it a rest for sure.

Gibson in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series against my beloved Detroit Tigers was one of the greatest pitching gems I have ever seen - Luckily the Tigers were able to win it in 7 games

Re: Bob Gibson Passes of Pancreatic Cancer
Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Gale Sayers all passing lately - all favorites of mine growing up.
The last pitch Bob Gibson ever threw was hit for a grand slam by Pete LaCock. A decade later there was an Old Timer’s game at Wrigley Field. LaCock stepped up to the plate and Gibson hit him.

This must be the week for great pitchers. Whitey Ford died last night.

Re: Bob Gibson Passes of Pancreatic Cancer
The Yankees of those days were a real enigma to me - I hated the Yankees because the Tigers could never knock them off - But, I liked the players - Mickey, Yogi, Whitey, Elston, Billy Richardson, Moose, Tony Kubek, etc. - Great ballplayers!!!

Dodger all-time lefty relief ace Ron Perranowski died last Friday night at age 84. Only one Dodger southpaw owns more team, NL and MLB records than "Perry"--Sandy Koufax.appstate77 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2020 12:25 pmThis must be the week for great pitchers. Whitey Ford died last night.
