After I graduated and took my first job, the first place I found an apartment was in Fayeteville...it just happened to be Watauga Apartments. My mother said "you can take the boy out of the mountains, but you can't take the mountains out of the boy."

That said, that article being in the Washington Post, I can just see a couple hundred thousand more people starting to buy property there.

Agreed on the property. We have delayed searching for a lot and/or investment home/retirement home untill the market settles. I get daily updates from Zillow. Since pandemic started it has gotten completely out of control

She's not wrong, the mountains have a pull. Those were some nice words from a visiting Tarheel grad. Granted, travel pieces are really just thinly veiled commercials that use eloquent words instead of mascots and screaming sales people. I use to run Moses Cone a lot. Easily one of my favorite places to run. Went there one time after it had been snowing for hours. Must have been 6-8 inches of untouched snow all over the lake area. I don't think we have to worry about this sparking some exodus. The exodus of FL and NJ has been happening for 20 years and isn't slowing down.

I just got home from camping on Price Lake. Every word she says is spot on. Those mountains have magic.

Had kinda put my dream of buying a cabin and retiring in the high country, but 2 years ago a door opened and we began looking. We found our home 3/31/2000. I believe the day the “lock-down” started. We , I believe, we’re blessed to get “in” before the explosion in real estate prices. We moved back to Watauga County almost 45 years to the day from when we left. We are hAPPy again!!!!

We bought a place last October over in Fleetwood which is very convenient to Boone( without actually being in Boone) and West Jefferson. Have been dreaming of owning a place in the High Country since graduation back in '83.

How many times have we gotten up in the morning and took a long deep breath of mountain air, exhaled and then smiled?
God I love this place.

Everyone should stay away.

Live in Marion.My wife and I every other weekend are in the HIgh Country.Eating at the Banner Elk Cafe(with the 3 menus) is a regular for us.Driving into Boone and B.R. is next.We love it.(my wife lived for a time in Avery County)

Nice fluff piece but not very deep on dining beer and things to do….
