Olympic sports too brutal to watch
I’m sure this will become a Covid debate soon but here it goes. For me too many to name- LOL. Saw a little women’s hammer throw the other night. Not a big fan. While I can enjoy a good traditional volleyball game it’s hard to watch 2-2 beach variety (swimsuits aside). Badmitton cracks me up as well. I remember playing this as a teenager and the goals were to either hit the thing 100’ in the air or smash the heck out of it at my opponent.

Re: Olympic sports too brutal to watch
I haven't watched much of the Olympics at all this year but typically I'll just watch swimming and women's gymnastics. I'd like to watch wrestling, skeet, trap, and archery but they rarely seem to have them on tv. All the others just don't interest me enough to hold my attention for more than a few minutes.
The mountains are calling and I must go

If include winter.... downhill skiing...the speed going down the hill
Summer.
Have enjoyed the one day long bike race. The women from Austria pulled out the big upset and had no other team members to help.

Re: Olympic sports too brutal to watch
I took fencing as one of my PE credits at App. I had sore muscles in places I never knew I had muscles. Fun class once I got past that.
I think a lot of theater majors took fencing along with others that just thought it would be a fun sport.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

Re: Olympic sports too brutal to watch
I think there were 11,000+ Olympians this time. They have added so many things at this point I feel like the experience as a viewer has been watered down a lot. Some of the events I really do scratch my head as to why they are included in the pinnacle of athletic events. Badminton? Really? I actually enjoy the BMX stuff but I don't think its place is in the Olympics. The various shooting events are a bit ridiculous too. I watched the archery and was in awe at how much equipment they had on their bows. They had counter weights, sights, levels, and a myriad of things helping them to the point that I felt it took away from the skill itself. I really enjoy the fencing. The suspense and the split second maneuvers to win a match are fantastic. Beach volleyball is a bit of a reach for me as well. We already have traditional volleyball. There was no need to add beach volleyball except to get women out there in skimpy bikinis. I have to draw the line at recreational sports like that. At this rate we will have disc golf, beer pong, and cornhole at the next Olympics.

Saying beach volleyball isn’t a sport is laughable. I assume you never played 2v2 in the sand. Having range to cover those spaces and jumping out of sand for a spike is impressive.
You guys would quit playing before the first game was completed from exhaustion.
Skateboarding was a weird add.

I'm not saying its not a sport. I'm saying it doesn't belong in the Olympics. Being difficult doesn't mean it should be in the Olympics.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 6:34 pmSaying beach volleyball isn’t a sport is laughable. I assume you never played 2v2 in the sand. As far as the exhaustion part I'll take that bet! I still get in my miles on foot and on the ole mountain bike!

People that bike enjoy committing what is and it’s a quality sport.
I’m not trying to be the best at exercising.

Well I can't say I still have an arm like a rocket. Maybe if I took some roids. I suppose if I do have a weakness then its my tireless work ethic.

I can see skateboarding as the summer counterpart to snowboarding. The technical skill, let alone the athleticism needed, for some of those tricks is insane.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 6:34 pmSaying beach volleyball isn’t a sport is laughable. One sport I've enjoyed seeing clips of is climbing. The speed runs are jaw-dropping cool.

I've been surfing and skating all my life and I wish they weren't in the olympics. That's just me being selfish though.

Re: Olympic sports too brutal to watch
The daughters have been watching field hockey (they need to NBC Sports app* on the PS4 for that one - USA didn't qualify), and the wife tends to have the main NBC feed on mute most of the evening, though she unmutes the swimming. That is about it in our household.
I lost interest in the Olympics along time ago, but these Games seem to be less interesting to me than usual. Maybe it's the lack of crowds?
*-I highly recommend the NBC Sports app if you are a fan of the Games.

Re: Olympic sports too brutal to watch
I enjoy seeing sports like fencing, table tennis and badminton I took fencing and badminton as PE courses at App and I always enjoyed watching table tennis. I could do without the more popular sports like basketball, baseball, golf and tennis. I enjoy those sports, but I see them all the time during the year. Women’s soccer was too political and lost interest in them. Surprise of the games for me has been 3X3 women’s basketball. That was quite entertaining. I live the fast pace.

Re: Olympic sports too brutal to watch
I've always enjoyed the Olympics for the variety of sports that one does not routinely get to watch. I could care less to watch basketball at the Olympics as one could find a game on at almost any time of the year.

Speaking of sports/teams that are unbearable. I nominate our women’s soccer team. Unfortunately for them, their purple haired leader and most of the team spent too much time being political activists and it cost them a chance at another gold.
Oh well...

Re: Olympic sports too brutal to watch
I was thinking more along the lines of that ribbon and hoop thing they do as part of gymnastics. Once professionals were allowed to play basketball and hockey I stopped caring. What is the point in having golf and tennis. I lean toward just mainly having the sports/events that you never see like T&F, swimming/diving, gymnastics, etc. The goofy stuff that involves equipment doesn’t do much for me like skateboarding, archery (reason stated above). I’ve always struggled with the sports decided by judges because it’s subjective.
