If communism were possible I'd sign up. But, it runs against human nature. Marx thought you could eliminate greed and perfect man. Moreover the Marxist path to get there is one of violence and dictatorship. I certainly wouldn't identify China or the old USSR as truly having achieved communism as they have/ had strong totalitarian government. In a truly communist society as described by Marx, the government whithers away.

Right? I respect his honesty. But I’m instantly fascinated how anyone would say they wanted to live in a communist country. Most Likely someone who enjoys the fruits of capitalism :-)
One, I never said I admired Marx. Two, please see the qualifier "if". I merely was referencing theoretical communism, a stateless, classless society. There are no such, never have been such, nor will there ever be such societies. I'm as driven by self interest as the next person. But yes, it would be aspirational to live a society where there are no have nots. However, as you are no doubt aware, Marx was wrong on many fronts including where his ideas would take hold.
Agree on Marx. And your clarification. One thing that always troubles me is there are too many younger people who almost romanticize communism and never make the distinction that while the concept sounds grand, it is like you said brutal and violent and oppressive. And we are at a weird place in our country where communism is the ‘cool’ thing and capitalism is the evil thing.
[/quote]

Communism is cool, capitalism is evil, men can get pregnant, and one can identify as a beach ball with arms if they want.....

Weird is putting it mildly...

“Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times.”

Our successes have led to this feeling.

I love the arguments. Even if they involve a little trash talking. After reading this entire thread with nothing else to do while I wait on my wife, I, with an Appalachian education, have come to these conclusions (after listening to all of you):
(1) Communism is no good. Those who are fooled into thinking it is will change their minds once they are under the system unless they have a position at the top.
(2) On the Covid, what information can you trust? Not much. Numbers, so-called facts?, even the CDC reports, Fauci, etc. in general may know some things but in specifics don’t know shucks.
(3) Wear a mask in a crowd. Get one that is comfortable. It prevents colds, flu, and protects from dust, and other things. And people will not recognize you at times, or will be less likely to approach you and that allows you to avoid prolonged boring conversations.
(4) Sports as we know it is changing for the worst. My career was in sports for40 years. It was good. I don’t like what I’m seeing now.
(5) Never trust the gubment. It doesn’t matter which party has the power and it doesn’t matter what they are talking about, most if it is misleading lies. Never trust the government. Never.
(6) Never trust the news outlets. They are puppets of the gov’t.
(7) Since the beginning of time, the devil has been loose in the world. He is wreaking havoc among the people, as usual. Guard yourself.
(8) I love Appalachian State. I hope our teams whup everybody. I love those mountains. I love snow. I love cold weather.
I hope you all fare well.

It is important to distinguish between theoretical communism and what we call communism under the Soviets or the Chinese. The latter in no way shape or form resemble the concept of communism. Those two societies represent why it can never be, because those that have the power don't/won't surrender it. Moreover, the means to the end, as described by Marx, initially entails a dictatorship to eliminate (exterminate?) those who resist. Morally, the ends don't justify the means, regardless of the ends.

The problem is many in society (more preventively in those under 30) doesn't understand the difference and we're doing a terrible job explaining it, even worse related concepts are often times encouraged by educators or left unchecked.

True statements. I'd add

For someone who hasn’t been to Boone since graduating in 2014, what will be some good new spots to eat around the area?

I just hope Gamekeeper is still around…
Gamekeeper is still there, but last I checked a couple of months ago, it's reserved out for like 3 weeks on the weekends. The Peddler is still good, but if you haven't been since 2014, I think you'll probably get lost around the area because it literally is unrecognizable from 7 years ago.

Thanks to the OP for the heads up on this thread! I appreciate being equipped with knowledge before my visit!!!!!!

Had not been to Casa Rustica since my last year in grad school. That was a once a year anniversary dinner for wife and I while in school for two years. It was expensive on part time students income. Went last week with the wife since up moving daughter to different apartment. Still great IMO and great to go down memory lane...not something new since 2014..oldie but a goodie given memories for the wife and I. Not a restaurant, however, you should go by the new football complex. They have a shop at the entrance. The new Alumni store on King St. is good as well. We purchased two glass App. St. decanters for liquior we have at house....

Russia (since the Soviet Union was dissolved as a specific entity several years ago) is more capitalistic now than Communist or Socialistic. Just my opinion.
