Cherry Grove Beach Seafood
Anyone willing to share some Cherry Grove area seafood restaurant knowledge. Staying a few days to "decompress" and want to try fresh seafood where the locals eat. We've tried all of the upscale, touristy places over the years; and prefer the established "locals." Hoskins' Res. is closed for the winter and some of the others are just greasy spoon places. We know about Berry's...recommendations for others requested and appreciated...anything from Windy Hill section north to Calabash.

Make the 10 mile drive up Hwy17 to the state line and take a right on Hwy 179 into Calabash. Take another right at the main intersection on to River Road and look for The Seafood Hut on your left. You won't be disappointed.

I haven't been there in a while but Fish is correct about the Hut in Calabash. Also, another thing you can do is stop by a local Fire Dept or Rescue Base and ask them. Tell them a firefighter/medic friend of yours suggested you ask. Trust me. We ALWAYS know where the best places to eat are.Kgfish wrote:Make the 10 mile drive up Hwy17 to the state line and take a right on Hwy 179 into Calabash. I also recommend The Hut. Duffy's usually has good oysters and Bimini's in the Restaurant Row area is usually good too.

I hear you about Hoskins. The wife and I eat there every chance we get but I'm often down there during their offseason. I would certainly check out the Shack now that they have renovated. The fried scallops we had at lunch one day were as good as any I've ever had. You also can't beat happy hour (4-6) at Duffy st. for steamed shrimp, crab legs, and oysters. The shrimp are 35 cents each, oysters 65. You might also want to try Crab Catchers and Snooki's in Little River. Headed down sometime after Christmas and looking forward to going back to Snooki's to sample their Happy Hour seafood menu. Had their burger the last time I was there and it blew River City's away.

My memories of Cherry Grove go back 50 years. So much has changed, the high rises are surreal.A constant is Boulineau's market. If you want to make your own seafood dish,it's the place to go,...for anything. They have it all.

Ella's and Beck's are both good in Calabash as well. If you want a little bit more upscale Chestnut Hill is just down the road toward South Myrtle.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Looks like we're gonna check out The Hut at Calabash. We're a five minute walk from Boulineaus and a 20 block drive to Duffy's. Very familiar with both. Will file the others away for future reference.

Two Duffy St. Locations near you. The one in Cherry Grove is across the street from Boulineaus (corner of Duffy St) and the one on Main in NMB, across from Hoskins. The Hut is very good but we seem to gravitate towards Ella's when in Calabash. Can't go wrong with either place.asu66 wrote:Thanks to all for the suggestions. Re: Cherry Grove Beach Seafood
I practically lived at the Hut during summers 1976-1980. Can echo the endorsements. It used to be very smoky and definitely a locals hangout. Haven't been in very long time but they used to be some what intolerant of tourists. Mostly tourists expecting some white glove fancy service. This is regular folk, affordable down home eating. If you are polite they are too. Don't know if that has changed as it has been a very long time.asu66 wrote:Thanks to all for the suggestions. Looks like we're gonna check out The Hut at Calabash. Went to eat there a few years ago and they were closed that night so we went to Ms. Ella's instead. It was pretty good too but would recommend staying with the specials (shrimp/flounder combo). If you want broiled or boiled seafood, a steak or fancy five star service don't go to Calabash. Though the Hut used to have a killer hamburger platter, fried shrimp and flounder rule. Or at least they used to.
The folks that used to own Cap'n John's (end of river st. and go left) had an ASU student in the family. Lost touch around 1980. Not sure if it is still the same people.
