Well-known and highly regarded Rowan County native, MLB baseball player, coach, manager and talent scout, Vern Benson, died on Monday, Jan. 20 in a Salisbury skilled nursing community. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill, one of the founding partners of the accounting firm of Benson, Blevins and Associates of North Wilkesboro.
Among other superlatives in his long life, Vern Benson is known for partnering with Bobby Richardson to hold Sunday morning Bible study or Sunday School with the NY Yankees where-ever the team might be playing. It was a practice that soon spread to every MLB club in both American and National leagues. It's now a tradition that continues throughout MLB. Participation is optional--but usually well attended.

Also his son Randy was an All Rowan, All Conference pitcher for North Rowan and a star pitcher for Rowan Legion.

We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.
