IMOp, Mel had the best voice quality.scatman77 wrote:I don't like da bums but I tip my cap to Kershaw. I love a good baseball story and performance regardless of who's doing it.
Another thing is listening to Vin Scully. As much as I like watching a good game (most any sport) there is something special about listening a Scully, or if they were still with us: Bob Prince, Jack Buck, Dizzy Dean and PeeWee Reese, Skip Caray, Mel Allen. They could make a radio broadcast come alive and make you seem like you could see the plays, the hits, and the pitches.
Yep - our generation grew up LISTENING to baseball - my favorite was Ernie Harwell, late at night I would search for 760 in the mountains of West Virginia so I could listen to my team - The Tigers --- why the Tigers, other than Al Kaline my guy, I don't know - I was the only Tiger fan I knew - in WV, it was either the Reds or the Pirates for most - so I did listen to Bob Prince a good bit as well ---scatman77 wrote:I don't like da bums but I tip my cap to Kershaw. Well, all World Series games do start after 8 p.m.scatman77 wrote:Cincy had Marty Brennaman who started in Rowan County, NC broadcasting American Legion ball. He was fun to listen to.
My 4th grade teacher was a big Cardinals fan. In October during the Cards/Yanks Series she'd stop class around 2:00 and we listened to Jack Buck until school was out. I'd like to see a teacher try that now.
Back in the day we would have to sneak our little transistor radios into school during the World Series (for you young guys, in the old days all WS games were in the afternoon) run the earphone up the sleeve of our shirts coming out at the cuff so we could place our ear in our hand with the elbow down and listen to the game acting like we were interested in what the teacher was saying ---scatman77 wrote:Cincy had Marty Brennaman who started in Rowan County, NC broadcasting American Legion ball.
