If anyone is near the Eastern Guilford High campus Wednesday morning I am planning to be there around 5 am to set up for a bit of lunar eclipse viewing. I hope to have everything up and running by 5:30 and hang around for an hour or so, until the sun rise, or clouds roll in, or the moon ducks behind the trees to the west of campus.

If anyone was watching WFMY news at 6 and watched the spot they did on the eclipse, well that's me.

I plan to be in the front of the school and if you enter off Bethel Church Rd you will see us near the flag pole. You will not find me near the flagpole that we have near the tennis courts which is near the Peeden Dr entrance. (The address is still Peeden Dr, but the main entrance is now Bethel Church Rd. This change happened due to the school fire and the new building being shifted on the old school grounds.)

Eclipse has been a no go in the Hickory area this morning, with pretty thick cloud cover, and intermittent showers/drizzle. Bummer. Hopefully you've got in some decent viewing down your way.

I was on campus from 5 am to around 6:15. I could have stayed a bit longer but a street light was directly in my field of view so instead of moving the telescope I packed up and went home for breakfast and a very short nap. Also clouds starting rolling in at this time as well. I took that as a signal that it was time to finish up.

I did have clouds roll in just as the event started but they were gone in a few minutes. It gave me a chance to read the morning paper. Then it was clear skies until 6:15 or so at which time I started packing up.

I am not sure why WFMY places some news clips on their website and other times they do not bother. The piece I was in was not bad by my standards, but they have not and I assume by now, will not, load the clip to their website.

Got on the bus to come to work at around 5AM, the upper left hand corner of the moon was starting to darken. At a little past 6AM, about the time I got to DC, the moon was almost completley darkened. Got on the shuttle and about the time I got to work (6:30 AM) moon was completely reddish/rust colored. Cool. I stood at the top of a hill (St. Elizabeth's/CGHQ) and took it in for about 5 minutes or so before heading on in. It (the moon) was just above Alexandria, VA, across the river from where I was.
