Here is the master file for ALL the SoCon Cup points going back to the very beginning in 1969. For the years I had the official Cup points I used those, and for years I only had final standings or tourney results I complied the numbers from those standings. Over the next few days I will post some stats.
Here is how the spreadsheet works.
Total Points is just that - it favors a school being in the SoCon the longest and has had more time to get points.
Average Points - Total points divided by number of years the sport has been played at the school. More recent additions to the SoCon have an advantage here since the points available is a function of the number of schools in the SoCon, and the Socon has awarded more points recently (12 or 11 for winning) than it did in 70s and 80s, with 7 to 10 points for winning, but usually 8 or 9 points.
Unity Points - This is an effort to factor out the fact that more points are awarded in each sport with a larger SoCon. Unity Points is the points earned divided by the points possible for that year. There is both a Total Unity Points and Average Unity Points. Unity Points is just something I thought of and is unofficial.
The total points for both men and women is unofficial. The SoCon does not combine both Cup points, but I thought it worth looking at for the big picture.
One can look at different spans of years by moving the End and Start sheets to the years of interest. At present I have this set for ALL the years but there would be a lot of value is setting the "START" sheet to any of the following:
The beginning of the Cups (the current method.)
The first Year App joined the SoCon (1971-1972 we played 3 sports in the fall.)
The year the SoCon was forced to I-AA/FCS status (1981-1982?)
The year the Germann Cup was started (1986-1987)
The year a rival joined the SoCon such as GaSo (this was a multiyear process it seems.)
A particular decade of interest or the time you were at App State as a student. Lots of options.
