Rough Weekend for App Athletic Teams

I’ve been in the world of accounting for most of my career so I have a really good understanding of debits/credits, balance sheets and income statements. I also know about gross and net. I’ve never seen the financial statements for App State athletics but some basic accounting tells me that even in the best of times there simply can’t be a huge surplus remaining to add a player salary line item. I know nothing but those who blame the AD for not “embracing NIL” baffle me. What exactly is he/the department supposed to do? Should they be begging the wealthier alumni to simply write more checks to add to a fund to pay players, most of whom will leave after a year for a paycheck we can’t match? What is the end game here?

I respect your perspective on this, but it’s what other schools have been doing for a while now. Why should App fans think differently?

For years, ASU AD’s/coaches were skilled at putting out a high caliber football product on a shoe string budget. The downside is that it created a fanbase that found reasons not to invest…even before TP/NIL fired up.

Let’s see how this plays out. Having funding is a key ingredient in the recipe, but not the only one. I hope App is able to be competitive over time with the resources at hand.
