Mountaineer soccer families face adversity as MSOC camp gets underway

Unread post by asu66 » Wed Aug 08, 2018 12:31 am

Having been on campus since July 30th working on fitness and agility with their team captains, the 28-member MSOC squad (14 returnees and 14 newcomers) will find themselves in almost immediate competition for an edge in playing time as fall camp gets underway early this morning. There's a short turnaround until the annual Black & Gold Scrimmage set for Saturday evening at TedMack.

By the time you read this, our players will have long since begun to internalize sobering news affecting current or former Mountaineers.

• Former Mountaineer All-SoCon M/F Ray Wells (Class of ’82) lost his son, Trae, last month. Raymond Edward "Trae" Wells, III of Campbellsville, KY passed from this life on Tuesday, July 3, 2018--gone too young at age 24. Trae was a 2017 grad of Lindsey Wilson College and was a former member of the LWC men’s soccer team coached by his dad. Ray, of course, is one of the premier NAIA coaches in the nation. He has led Lindsey Wilson to a 492-97-31 overall mark—good for a .819 winning percentage, 22 conference championships and nine national titles since 1992.

• Former Mountaineer F Billy Viger (Class of ’72) is recovering from major surgery following the diagnosis of a serious medical condition. Billy faces a long road to recovery before he can return to his new position as head coach at Marietta’s Mt. Carmel Christian Academy. Billy’s a former All-SoCon player and the MVP of App’s ’71 team. He served as a grad assistant coach under HOF Coach Vaughn Christian’s first SoCon Championship team. In addition, Viger is a member of the Reich College of Education’s prestigious Rhododendron Society.

• Former Mountaineer GK Jake Agnew is no longer with the program and will miss the entire 2018 season due to a severe knee injury that did not respond to initial surgery as had been hoped for. Jake will require additional surgical care and rehab. His prognosis for returning to active player status in collegiate soccer is unclear.

Julie O’Keefe, wife of Mountaineer head coach Jason O’Keefe, continues to receive treatment necessary to aid in her battle against the odds of a major illness diagnosed several months ago. She is facing a long, tough fight for recovery.

Please keep the Wells, Viger, Agnew and O’Keefe families in your thoughts and prayers as they face either loss, sadness and/or great uncertainty.
