J Virgil took 2nd in the 100 Q. That’s been the men’s highlight to date. Otherwise abysmal.Finals today .

Would our times and such put us in the lead in the SoCon or is the team just not performing as they did in years past?

Hopefully the finals today will play to our strengths.

Sitting at ninth with a few events to go. Ugh. We did have a couple of strong showings but apparently the depth just isn’t there. Women are competitive overall in the middle of the pack.

I tuned in to ESPN3 just as they were rolling the credits.

Seems women fell to 5th and men climbed to 5th.

I still find it amazing that neither Georgia school fields a mens team.

Title IX. But that just feels like an excuse. Even if they don’t field a full team they could send a few men.

Maybe it's because I love Track & Field but it just seems shameful to me that a Division one athletics program would not field a team. Track & Field is THE fundamental athletic competition.

By the way, the men's team hasn't fallen off. The competition in the Sunbelt is FAR stronger than it ever was in the SoCon. The team is improving but just hasn't made it to the top of the heap...YET.

Our lack of depth or absence of performers in all events is a disadvantage.

I thought as much and one could find records, I just don't have time to got that far into it.

For all the success we had with SoCon T&F there were some signs of Sanford taking huge leaps and beating us in the last two (I think it was) SoCON OTF championships. Also from my understanding only two or three schools (App, WCU, Sanford at the end for us) fielded a full T&F team. Correct me if I am wrong as I don't keep up with T&F that much.

XC is a stong point for us and the distances races, which are some of the same runners. Is our weak point the field events or not fielding a full team leaving points on the table for other schools to scoop up?

I thought it was WCU our last couple of years in the SoCon that took some titles away from us.Could be mistaken . Anyway , yes the competition is better, and deeper.Fifth is competitive and we won some events. Hoping for the next Mary Jane Harrelson and Lafayette Jordan ....

I haven't kept up with T&F like I once did but we have a young guy working here at BofA who ran for App and I've enjoyed talking to him. I think throwing events are a weak spot for us right now.

Lafayette Jordan was a senior my Freshman year. He was a great 400m guy. That's definitely a blast from the past.

I think you are correct but Sanford was knocking at the door and may have put us in 3rd place.

All of this is not to take away from all the accomplishments XC adn T&F have done at App over the years.

Yes,I checked and Western is dominating the SoCon. Three men’s titles in a row and three of the last four women’s.Interesting to check winning times Sunbelt vs SoCon,if you are interested. At the top it’s really pretty close ,but depth-wise it drops significantly. We have some work to do if we want to get to the top, especially in the field events. Sam Yanotti and Oscho Rufty....Mel Hubbard?

The SoCon has always had some good athletes at the top. The depth of the talent in the Sunbelt is what makes it hard to score more points in the Conference meet formats. While we were in the SoCon, we had no trouble picking up points in most events, even if we couldn't win the event. Not so in the Sunbelt. Hopefully we continue to improve and climb back to the top where we belong! :-)
