MSOC: Apps at Jacksonville 7 PM Southern Oak Stadium
Appalachian State University men's soccer opens the 57th season in program history in Florida with a 7 pm Atlantic Sun Conference match against the Jacksonville Dolphins this evening.
About the Mountaineers
The young App State squad, which is made up of 25 underclassmen, were able to get some good experience against a pair of experienced programs in Radford and Campbell in exhibition contests. The Black and Gold fell to Radford, 1-0, before registering a 1-1 tie against the Camels. Charlie Baird scored a goal against the Camels while Aldo Tarantini recorded his score in the extra 30-minute session. Fourteen of the student-athletes are freshmen. Appalachian brings back nine of 11 players who scored a goal including leading goal scorer, Juan Hernandez. The sophomore was the only freshman last season to lead his team in goals and points with six. Reed Hunnicutt returns as well after a team-high three assists and was second on the team with five points. Jake Chasteen is back for his senior campaign as the primary goalkeeper, as he played 1137 minutes with 1.19 GAA and four clean sheets. Chasteen finished near the top in numerous categories in the Sun Belt.
Preseason Accolades
Chasteen and Hernandez both earned All-Sun Belt Preseason honors after their solid 2017 campaigns. App was picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll.
Season Openers
App State is 25-25-5 all-time in season openers while the last win coming in the first game of a regular season came in 2012 against ETSU. The Black and Gold's last win on the road in the season opener came against the Bucs in 2008.
Scouting Jacksonville (0-0, A-Sun)
The Dolphins were picked to finish third in the Atlantic Sun Preseason poll after appearing in the conference tournament title game. JU went 6-10-1 in 2017 but finished the year with a 6-3-1 mark after starting the campaign 0-7. Kai Bennett and Patrick Harding were named preseason all-conference. JU returns 17 letterwinners and brings in nine newcomers. The Dolphins are coached by sixth-year head coach Mauricio Ruiz.
Series History
App owns a 2-1 mark against the Dolphins, and will face each other for the first time since 2014 when App earned a 2-1 triumph. The Mountaineers are 2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road in the series.

If this is the 57th season then the opening day record should be adding up to 56 matches, but 25-25-5 adds to 55 opening day matches. I assume records of incomplete or a typo.

Maybe there was a season when we didn't play an opening game, but started with the second game?McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Fri Aug 24, 2018 12:04 pmIf this is the 57th season then the opening day record should be adding up to 56 matches, but 25-25-5 adds to 55 opening day matches. A few years ago I received the Appalachian Magazine in the mail and the math was off on the cost per copy. Simple math mistake but I do hate to see stuff from App not add up correctly. (And I most likely have more grammar mistakes than that in this very post so I am not being critical.)
Of course that raises the issue of why I was even reading that part of the magazine, but I usually notice without trying that part of a magazine, leaflet, pamphlet or broadside that is printed by a government agency and is required.

Some of the records for the Eric DeGroat years (1962-1969) were lost when Coach DeGroat died unexpectedly in 1970 and again when Broome-Kirk Gym was demolished. Coach DeGroat started the men's soccer program in '62, but there has always been a debate about when the team was recognized to be a varsity level sport. Was it in '62 or '63 or '64? Several guys here on the MMB played for Coach DeGroat including yours truly. I can vouch for '63 and '64--because I still have my uniform jerseys and two total knee replacements to show for it. There was a team in '62, but was it a recognized college team? The debate goes on and so does the confusion.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Fri Aug 24, 2018 12:04 pmIf this is the 57th season then the opening day record should be adding up to 56 matches, but 25-25-5 adds to 55 opening day matches. Apps take a 1-nil lead after the first 45 on a goal by true freshman forward Charlie Baird (Nottinghamshire, England) in the 26th minute of play. O'Keefe has substituted liberally so far. The guys should be fresh for the final 45.

Apps take a 2-nil lead on a goal by true freshman Camden Holbrook (Cary, NC) in the 52nd minute. Soph Parker Washburn picked up the assist.

I don’t see anything wrong with alternative facts!asu66 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 24, 2018 3:37 pmSome of the records for the Eric DeGroat years (1962-1969) were lost when Coach DeGroat died unexpectedly in 1970 and again when Broome-Kirk Gym was demolished. Re: MSOC: Apps at Jacksonville 7 PM Southern Oak Stadium
Jacksonville's official scorer missed a call last night. App's first goal was initially awarded to Charlie Baird, but was changed to Camden Holbrook after the game. That gave the Cary (NC) Green Hope product his first collegiate "hat trick." Three different underclassmen contributed the assists.
Coach O'Keefe is quietly, but successfully, assembling a squad that has some scoring weapons.
