BOONE — A hotel and conference center supporting athletic events and seminars, housing, parking, collaborative academic spaces and mixed-use projects are on the short list of potential Appalachian State developments at the old Watauga High School property, in addition to a track, tennis and softball facilities.

The long-range plans for the property are to be presented to the University of North Carolina system Board of Governors this week as Appalachian State seeks Millennial Campus designation for the 75-acre old WHS site, the 2.1-acre Legends site, a 0.6- acre Howard Street property, 5.5-acre Appalachian Panhellenic Hall site and 6.7-acre expansion of the existing University Hall Millennial site.

Millennial Campus designation gives the university the flexibility to enter into agreements with private sector firms to develop campus properties, facilitates issuing bonds to finance development of the properties and allows the university to keep all revenues related to leasing space in the properties.

Excited to hear this news. Really excited to here they may move the track. In the meantime, why dont they paint the track. Black maybe? That orange look is an eyesore

If it's painted black, it will still look like a track. If green, it would kinda sorta blend in. Either way it would still not stand out quite as much.

Oh, I know painting it black doesnt fix everything, just makes it look like less of an eyesore and would blend in better. That orange tract looks dated

I'm pretty sure they've said that Owens and the Track are both being torn up after this season. Don't know what the track and field is doing in the meantime.

Yes, but I don't screen all your posts as you don't mine. Just this was the Watauga Democrat's article in Sunday's paper.

Track will not completely be torn up this winter, only the part that will be torn up is in the way of construction of NEZ project. Track and Field will not have any home meets in Spring 2019.

Is the thought behind that being the track could still be used for practice, for things like hurdles and the 100 and 200, for as long as possible?

That is correct. We still need a track to practice on. Three-fourths of a track is better than no track at all. John Weaver retiring last year when he did was no coincidence with the impending construction.
