BOONE, NC. -- The Appalachian State men's soccer team is set to host the #2 seed Coastal Carolina in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship tonight at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out

The Mountaineers used two first-half goals, and a goal at the end of the second half to take the win over Howard on Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals. Mason Robicheaux got the scoring started in the 20th minute, finishing a corner kick sent into the box by Dimitris Moraitakis for Robicheaux's second goal and game-winner of the season.

Marc Pfrogner added the insurance goal in the 44th minute, finishing a well-played ball from Nick Rogers. That is Pfrogner's first goal of the season and first assist for Nick Rogers. App ended the first half with six shots compared to four from the Bison. Jacob Madden made one save in the opening 45 minutes off a shot from Javauni Garwood, the only time he was tested all match. Alex Hernandez capped the night with his fifth goal of the season, converting a penalty kick in the final seconds of the game to give the Mountaineers' the 3-0 advantage.

Record Season

App State recorded its eighth shutout of the season, which is the most recorded shutouts since the 2011 season when the Mountaineers posted 11. With the win over Howard, the Mountaineers move to 11-6-1, their highest win total since the 2002 season when the Mountaineers recorded 13 wins.

Game-Winners

Mason Robicheaux scored his second game-winner Wednesday night, and is now tied for second on the team in game-winners with Nick Rogers and Kelan Swales. Camden Holbrook leads the Mountaineers with three game-winners, which is good for fourth in the Sun belt.

United Soccer Coaches Poll

The Mountaineers were recently ranked 10th in the Southeast region in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. This is the 10th straight week the team has been ranked in the top 10 in the region.

Regular Season Matchup vs. Coastal

Appalachian State fell to Coastal Carolina, 4-2, on Oct. 19 in Boone. Coastal Carolina took a 4-0 lead after the first half, but the Mountaineers came out fighting in the second half, scoring two quick goals just a minute apart in the 48th and 49th minute. Juan Hernandez found Alex Hernandez for his third goal of the season. The second goal was scored by the head of Camden Holbrook off a cross into the box from Parker Cross. App State continued to battle, but could not find the final two goals to equalize.

Appalachian held the advantage in shots, taking 12, eight of which were in the second half, compared to nine by Coastal. The Mountaineers also held the Chanticleers without a shot in the second half.

Scouting Coastal Carolina

The Chanticleers come into today's match with a record of 8-7-2. Since playing the Mountaineers, they are 2-1 against Sun Belt opposition, including wins over Howard and Georgia Southern, and a loss to Georgia State. Sam Snaith, the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, and Tyrone Mondi are leading the team in goals with six. Alberto Ciroi has started every game in goal for Coastal Carolina, with a 1.08 goals against average.

Series History

Coastal Carolina leads the overall series with a record of 4-2-1. The last time these teams met was Oct. 19, when the Chanticleers defeated the Mountaineers, 4-2, in Boone.

Up Next

The winner of this matchup will advance to the Championship on Sunday, Nov. 17 and faces the winner of the #5 Georgia State vs. #1 Central Arkansas. The Championship match is set for 1 p.m. at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex in Boone.
