SoCon Wrestling Tournament

Unread post by t4pizza » Sat Mar 09, 2024 8:06 pm

Ethan Oakly (2 seed) just won the title over a Cambell kid who was the #1 seed. 133 is a deep weight class in the SoCon with the top 3 finishers getting automatic qualifier for the NCAA championships. Most weight classes only get 1 auto bid.
That win not only makes Oakley a champion, but it clinches the tournament championship for App State! This is a huge deal in an essentially rebuild year with a lot of young kids. Cambell beat us in the duals and won the regular season title, for us to come up big like this in the tournament is a huge testament to our kids and our coaches who got them ready. Go Apps!

Final seconds of the 184 finals, our freshman Brooker keeps pushing as the Campbell kid is just trying to hold on and get to the end of the match with the lead. Last second takedown sends #3 seed App State Brooker to a SoCon Championship and an auto bid to the NCAA in 2 weeks. What a great match by a young kid that got pinned by the Campbell kid earlier in the season. Redemption is sweet. App is currently 5 for 5 in the finals, with 1 more wrestler to go. Go Apps!

Our Heavy Weight (#2 seed) Jacob Sartorio has an uphill battle against the #9 wrestler in the country from Cambell in the finals. Cambell stuck our guy earlier in the year, the Cambell dude is no joke.

We lose the final match, but still 5 conference champions is very impressive. We only lose 1 match in the championship round. Great day for App State wrestlers. Another SoCon tournament Championship!!

Congrats to the 5 App State 2024 SoCon Champions:

133- Ethan Oakley
149- Cody Boyd
157- Tommy Askey
165- Will Miller
184- Tomas Brooker

Each of them earns the auto bid to the NCAA tournament. Some have been there before and for some it is a brand-new experience, but none of them will ever forget that they qualified for the national tournament by winning the SoCon title.
