MSOC "Pack the Mack" Night v. Wof Terriers

Unread post by asu66 » Tue Oct 15, 2013 1:15 am

It's "Pack the Mack" night at Ted Mackorell Field tonite as Wofford's first place (SoCon) Terriers (7-4-1, 3-0) come to town to take on the sixth place Apps (2-3-6, 0-2-1). While most collegiate soccer fans would yawn at the mention of Wofford as a strong side, the fact is that Ralph Polson has built a fine program over the last six seasons. His 2012 squad lost to Elon 2-1 in the SoCon Championship game. The Terriers exacted some revenge on Saturday evening by taking a 2-1 OT win over the sixteenth ranked Phoenix on the road at Elon.

Now the #1 team in the SoCon comes to the High Country to take on the Apps before perhaps a record crowd at the off-campus App State soccer pitch. A Mountaineer win would be a nice mid-season feather in the ol' cap.

Awesome! Maybe a season changer. Apps were winless in 3 socon games this year, and tonight knockoff 1st place team. Fine Job.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, pretty interesting night: an attendance record at "The Mack" (as Ted Mackorell Field has come to be known), 37 fouls, 9 YC's, and a win over the league's #1 team. We'll take it.

And I thought the Furman and UNC-G matches were "chippy."

Navy was still the chippiest match I've seen this year. I don't know how many total cards or anything... but, both teams had a player sent off... and Navy's coach also got a red card.... after the match had ended. I've never seen anything like it.

No way Wofford is the best team in the conference, although they have a real playmaker in their left mid, Nester. Kid is extremely fast on the ball, and creates a lot of chances for the Terriers. I thought both Elon and Furman are better sides, on the whole, with Furman being the most talented (but young). Wofford seems to rely on their very dangerous throw-ins to set up scoring opportunities in the box. A dangerous/accurate throw-in combined with a 6'5" target (CB) presents a most unique challenge for defenders.

Officiating was very inconsistent and the Center Ref let a lot go, to the point of letting the game get out of hand. I watched the Wofford Center Back throw elbows all night, including 1st half when he connected with KoJo's head and 2nd half when he again resorted to the flying elbow method on the far side of the field. No call either time. Unbelievable. Then he calls a BS foul against us for a slight tug of the jersey, just outside our 18. Foul led to a free kick, which led to the hand ball in the box and PK for Wofford. The funny thing is, Wofford used the shirt pull method all night with impunity. There was no other way for the 6'5" CB to keep up with our speedy strikers (Stanley and Ewahia) Pure BS.

On a more positive note, great crowd. About 1,100, I believe. Partnered with the local soccer club to Pack the Mack. Great crowd. Hope we can get our winning MoJo back one of these days and Pack the Mack with our student body!
