BOONE, N.C. - Junior Pepe Rangel netted a late goal on a penalty kick, but Campbell could not overcome a pair of second-half scores by Appalachian State in a 2-1 setback on Sunday evening.

Nearly every player on the roster saw action as fifth-year Head Coach Steve Armas observed his squad in their first live-game action of the 2014 season. The Mountaineers improved to 2-0 in the preseason after a 2-1 victory over UNC Asheville on Friday.

A pair of newcomers made their way into the starting lineup for the Camels as Bradley Farias and Matt Martinez made their debuts. In addition, seven other players saw their first collegiate playing time on Sunday, including goalkeepers Matthew Mozynski, Jeff Madigan and Jeff Kennedy.

Rangel, Tunji Osifeso and College Sports Madness Big South Preseason First Teamer Ricki Gaez led the Camels with three shots apiece. Two of Osifeso's shots found their target, and Rangel and freshman Michael Clemmons each had one shot on goal.

For much of the contest, the two sides appeared even, with Appalachian State holding only a narrow 13-12 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Mozynski, who played just under 61 minutes in goal, made four saves for the Camels on the night.

With the sides deadlocked at 0-0 after a scoreless first half, Appalachian State's Stephen Chapman broke through at the 49:49 mark off an assist from Trey Hemphill to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead five minutes into the second frame.

Ben Steen would make the scoreline 2-0 in favor of the Mountaineers with a score at 71:47. Hemphill again served as the setup man for the goal, crossing it into the box and allowing Steen to finish the play with a header into the back of the net.

Campbell drew a penalty chance with just over a minute remaining in the contest, and Rangel converted to get the Camels on the board.

The Fighting Camels will return to action on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. as they travel to NC State for their second of three preseason contests. They will close out the preseason slate by hosting George Mason next Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
