Wrestling leading the SoCon

John Mark Bentley continues to do a fine job with the program. Chattanooga is a quality wrestling program, so being on top is no joke.

Even in the "SmallCon?"

Some of the better wrestling programs are Division 2, the PA schools (Shipensburg and Bloomsburg) are always competitive for example.

There are only about 70 DI schools with wrestling now, and more likely to have less than more in future years I would imagine.

I don't follow wrestling that much at any level but I could see DII schools filling a niche in a way.

I meant just what I said, some of the better wrestling programs are from Division 2 schools. Unlike many sports, like football and basketball for example, wrestling is more reliant on individual performance (hope this makes sense). Although wrestling is a team sport, each individual athlete performs one at a time. And, each individual competes with another of equal weight and "general" skill. Therefore, "smaller (FCS)" schools can compete with "larger(FBS)" ones because of this fact. Thus, I'm attempting to explain why being ahead of Chatty in wrestling is a significant accomplishment even though they are SoCon and we are not. Once again, hope this all makes sense.

Do Oklahoma and Iowa in Division I still have hugely successful programs like they once did? And no, I'm not going to Google the darn thing.

From what I know the B12 is the dominant conf for wrestling - has been and still is.

I think SoCon wrestling is an amalgam of 3 SoCon schools and then 5 other schools from 4 different conferences. I don't know how many other wrestling conferences are this combined but I bet it is a few. I do think there is still a pecking order with some P5 conferences leading the way.

6. Cornell

11. Lehigh

15. Edinboro (Division 2, I believe)

23. Bucknell

25. Rider

And more B10 than B12 as well it seems though some of those B10 schools may have been B12 before schools started moving conferences.

But this is a sport that can play to a non-P5 school.

Gotcha. Agree - several schools (particularly in PA, as you point out) are DI in Wrestling only, and are very competitive.

Crazy that there are only 70 schools...and I believe exactly 20% of those are in the Big Ten!

Number 15, Edinboro is one of those Div II PA Schools. As a matter of fact the AD from a few years back knew them well.
