App v GS rivalry needs a trophy
This topic seems to come up every year, yet nothing ever happens. Troy and S Bama have a good thing going with the "battle for the belt". App and WCU had a fun tradition with the "jug". In the absence of our game v WCU, why have we not created a trophy or symbol for the App v GS game?
This rivalry is one of the best in the SB and is showcased on ESPN every year. It would be great to have something at stake. I've ever emailed Doug Gillin about this in the past with a positive response, but nothing has happened.
Is it up to the fans to get this started, or should we collectively approach DG? I think the two schools should collaborate and vote on what to do. I my opinion we should have the "battle for the paddle". We could play for a large wooden teachers paddle, due to both institutions previously being teacher colleges. Honestly I don't care what it is, just something we can market, and that will enhance the rivalry.

Or we could market it as "The Rivalry That Doesn't Need a Trophy ".

I'd rather request that the game be played at the end of the year during rivalry week. No need for a trophy.

For those saying the trophy is cheesy or not needed, the trophy would not be meant to impress you. It would be for the students of both fan bases as well as players.

Re: App v GS rivalry needs a trophy
I think the reason nothing ever happens is that there's not much support for the idea beyond a few message board posters, and the ideas for the trophy are always something lame like a teacher's paddle.

Southern and NMSU play this coming Saturday. So, no, not a week behind.

I'm surprised at the response. I did not realize so much of our fan base thought the idea was so lame. The jug seemed to be fun for the player, coaches, and the fans. It also seems that the best rivalries in college football have something similar at stake. I guess I misread the level of interest.

So you're suggesting a pizza as a trophy?

Some do, some don't. I don't have any issue with rivalry trophies in general - I agree many are pretty cool. I just get the sense that some people are trying to force something here because we don't have the Mountain Jug game anymore.yosef13 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2017 9:31 amI'm surprised at the response. Shoot, if we're going to have a trophy, with GS, might as well just make it another jug - our moonshine vs. their creek water.

Re: App v GS rivalry needs a trophy
I would understand the displeasure of manufacturing something if the rivalry did not exist. All of these traditional trophies were force on the fans bases at some point. Why not start a new tradition, or bring back the jug? The trophies themselves are ridiculous, but that seems to be the point. Check out all the ones below.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2017 9:42 amSome do, some don't. I don't have any issue with rivalry trophies in general - I agree many are pretty cool. Re: App v GS rivalry needs a trophy
I can take a trophy or leave it. If it develops, great, but if not, it's still a rivalry.

I believe we have already developed that tradition. The students of the winning team gets to stomp all over the pizzas of the losing team. Think back a few years, remember?

Yes, which is why I asked the question.
We could get corporate sponsorship for the game!!!

I could go either way on a trophy but don't think its necessary for the rivalry. Honestly, their lackluster performance over the last few years has dulled the rivalry. It's almost like playing western again.

Re: App v GS rivalry needs a trophy
I think the best idea I've heard regarding the rivalry has to do with a name for the game. I can't remember who came up with the idea, but I like the name "Black and Blue Bowl." I don't really care if there is a trophy associated with it or not.
