Re: One more WS Journal-Post NMSU
Actually, the halftime score was 17-14. That play was an even bigger turn around.

Re: One more WS Journal-Post NMSU
You have to play better for 60 minutes. It means nothing to keep pointing to the first 50 minutes. And saying it their QB hadn't thrown six interceptions they would have won is like saying "if Taylor had completed his passes..... If the OLine had blocked or if we hadn't gotten those penalties......The headline should be:
"When it came to crunch time Appalachian delivered."
Better teams do that.

Ummm...we couldn't have been up 17-7 at halftime because we were being out-played by a superior team.

Re: One more WS Journal-Post NMSU
The solution is to add a column to the standings- should have won. Old worn out phrase- gotta play for the whole 60 minutes really means something. And when guys talk about "all 3 phases" that really means something as well. We were fortunate to make plays when needed but a win is a win. I would say that ECU, UNC and even BYU would love to trade the places with App right about now.

He had me until Ga Southern's defense is better than App or Troy. Thanks for the laugh Coach.

Yep, laughed out loud at that one too. He's obviously setting expectations because he knows they could lose to a win-less team.

Re: One more WS Journal-Post NMSU
I don't buy the whole idea that NMSU had a better game plan and executed it. They played a high risk, high reward offense by slinging it down field to their speedster receiver(s) over and over. That is going to result in some big plays and, yes...scores. Guess what also happens. SIX INTERCEPTIONS! It was an exciting game to watch, but it was kind of crazy. Moore found his legs and App made a ton of big plays also which meant we kept putting that NMSU back on the field instead of eating up clock. It was stressful, but actually a lot of fun to watch. App came out on top because, in the end, our athletes were better conditioned and performed better in the fourth quarter. We relied on solid football and not on slinging and praying. That's just my opinion of course. I never claimed to be an expert.
Note: For the record, I do think NMSU deserves kudos for playing a heck of a game and I was frustrated by our slow start. I'm just not buying the argument that they are a better team. Not even close. They do have some great athletes though.

Re: One more WS Journal-Post NMSU
Here is the bottom line for our team.
We are just marginally beating the teams we have played in our conference so far. We are not blowing them out. The two SB opponents we have played so far were in the cellar last year and not top teams. That means that we are not standing head and shoulders above our conference mates almost half way through the season. I had hoped for more and bet you our team did too. We can improve but that is our reality at this moment. Hopefully we improve significantly through the remainder of the season.

The goal is to win the game - other things can be ironed out during the next week - no way to erase a Loss ---

AtlAppMan, I understand where you are coming from but you have to factor in the adds and deletions through attrition and matriculation. The biggest difference that I see is in the OL play. Collins graduation left a huge hole in the attitude of the line play. We are starting a true Freshmen (I think) at a very crucial spot in the line. He is doing a good job but he doesn't have the intangibles that Collins had, yet. Yes we have three of the five OL from last year returning but it doesn't automatically gel. No disrespect to the job that the young man is doing, but Parker Collins he is not.

I will say that Hannon is giving Taylor better snaps than he got last year.

The truth in all these posts are somewhere in the middle. We aren't a consistent team right now with many areas we can improve with the talent and coaches to win the rest of the games on the schedule.

As someone with a Statistics degree from Appalachian, I wholeheartedly disagree with your flippant statement that statistics are for losers. Statistics provide a great indicator as to what is the probable outcome. Doesn't always work out that way but it will provide a better indicator of what is likely than the use of transitive property theory.

Don't get your Six Sigma in a wad.............Stats in a sports event are a crutch for the losing team to wallow in.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2017 7:48 amAs someone with a Statistics degree from Appalachian, I wholeheartedly disagree with your flippant statement that statistics are for losers. Re: One more WS Journal-Post NMSU
Some teams are absolute beasts between the 20’s but can’t finish. Some teams look great for 50 minutes but can’t seal the deal. NMSU is a team with 18-22 year olds who practice and actually play games to win. They also have some athletes and a coaching staff that knows the game and tries really hard to win. They played well but lost. We made the plays that made the difference. Stats do mean something but not everything. I have never gotten so excited about sacks. A QB can get tackled a foot behind the line on a down and it’s a sack. If he converts the next one play into a first down the sack was meaningless. Now a strip sack fumble with a defensive recovery is different. Did anyone happen to catch the Panthers game last Sunday? What did they have 10 penalties or so in the first quarter? Did it end up mattering? Nope.
Teams that say, “well we won on the stats sheet!” Are happy about the wrong thing. The better team won in Boone last Saturday. End of story

Re: One more WS Journal-Post NMSU
For the record, I am not saying NMSU is the better team. I would pick us to win 10 out of 10 against them. What I am saying is they played well enough to win the game. That simple. No need to over complicate it.
Look back to our 2007 team. We're GaSo and Wofford better team than us? No way in hell! But they beat us because they played a hell of a game.
Just because someone says a team played well enough to win does not mean they think said team is the better team. That's a HUGE difference.
