Endowment and Campaign for Appalachian

Nice Endowment Gift!

http://appstatesports.com/news/2017/11/ ... rship.aspx

When the $200 million Campaign for Appalachian finished a few years back, the $50million goal for athletics was not met buy I think about $47million was raised. What did this money do? Is it paying our scholarship load?

Very nice! If I'm reading this correctly, $500k fully endows 1 scholarship so App would need an endowment fund of $42.5mil to fully fund all 85 football scholarships.

Does anyone know how much more we need to be fully endowed?

I don't understand the endowment very well. Our University Endowment is low at $90 some million. Charlotte is almost twice that amount. When we raised the $200 million why didn't our endowment figures go up by some amount?

Here's where the funds raised through the Campaign for Appalachian went. Campaign for Appalachian

Appalachian is still woefully behind in scholarship dollars available to our students. The Appalachian Foundation will be making a concerted effort to increase that availability in the near future. At the end of the day, our ability to compete for the highest caliber students is hindered by our lack of scholarships available. Even students who don't necessarily have the financial need for scholarship funds will often choose the university they attend based on scholarships / fellowships granted.

Most endowments with which I am familiar retain the principal of the endowment in tact and only spend the earnings from the endowment. This allows the endowment to create "perpetual giving". Appalachian's endowment is small in comparison to schools that are larger, older, and / or privately funded. Consider that places like UGA and Chapel Hill were up and running more than 100 years before Appalachian.

We can all do something to increase the scholarship dollars available to all of our students.
  • Appalachian license plates fund the Alumni Memorial Scholarship
  • The Appalachian Fund benefits 70 different areas / programs on campus
  • Yosef dollars fund athletic scholarships
Every dollar counts. I, for one, appreciate every donation made in support of our university.

The endowment increased by just over $29 million.

Thank you Daphne.

I see UNC-CH is in a campaign to raise over $2,000,000,000

Their endorsement is at $3,000,000,000 currently.

Our poor little $100,000,000 endowment and our $200,000,000 campaign seem pale in comparison.

My youngest was nominated for the Levine foundation Scholarship at UNCC. It is a $105,000 scholarship. They usually offer about 20 annually. He finds out if he made it through the first rounds of cuts tomorrow. It would be awesome if we had as many similar scholarships as our peers.

Remember, to fully fund football , we have to allow for the so called minor sports as well as Title X.

Saints knows more about this than most anyone on this board.

UNC et al have enough...mr. Big donor. Your donation to App will go much further and mean more. Here's how.....This is a pitch we need to use when elephant hunting. I wonder if we've considered putting together teams of trained alumni to solicit wealthy with no ties to App.

Appalachian is certainly improving in the development arena. What is now called "development" was once considered "fundraising". The development game differs from simple fundraising in that it seeks to earn the attention and trust of donors with major gift capacity and to cultivate a broad base of consistent donors (annual giving).

The development staff at App is quite solid. Each major division of the university has an associate vice-chancellor for development charged with growing the donor base and dollars raised for that particular area (e.g. - Will Sears is the associate vice-chancellor for development for the Walker College of Business; Suzette Mauney holds the same title for Athletics). The associate vice-chancellors for development report to Randy Edwards who is the vice-chancellor for development for the university as a whole. All of these folks have multiple support staff to assist in the mechanics of meeting donors and handling the administrative functions of receiving donations.

None of us have to be the ones to ask someone for a gazillion dollars. If we have someone to introduce to the idea of giving a major gift to Appalachian, our best service is to connect the that donor to the appropriate folks in development at App. The development folks know how to grow the relationships and be patient in allowing that donor relationship to lead to a major gift. It would not be at all unusual for a major gift to be a year or more in the making.

So, yes, we have development teams. Yes, they know just how to get those dollars in the door. We can help by having that "cup of coffee" with the development teams and the potential donor.

Not really. An endowed scholarship means that the earnings are funding the current scholarship need. If that $500,000 earns 5%, the earnings would be $25,000. The in-state cost of attending Appalachian including tuition and fees, room, board, books, and living expenses is right at $20,000 per year.

Sun Belt Endowments: (according to Wikipedia so may not be exact)

Idaho - $237.5m
NMSU - $214.8m

GaSt - $186m
ULL - $185.8m
TexSt - $164.3m
App - $94.4m
Troy - $85.5m
stAte - $54.9m
GS - $50m
CCU - $25.5m
ULM - $23m

Others of note:

UNC-G - $251.8m
ODU - $213.7m
ECU - $207.9m
UNCC - $181.5m
USM - $116.8m
Marsha - $110.4m

It's doubtful, unless App has a wealthy benefactor(s) drop some serious dough, that we'll ever catch Texas St. to get in the top 3 of the conference. However, I'd like to see the university's next goal, in the next 5-10 years, to focus on getting to a level somewhere between Marsha and USM which would require another $15-20m over our current endowment.
