Insights from the enemy.

Unread post by toledorocketman » Thu Dec 07, 2017 2:33 pm

Born and raised in Toledo Ohio but now live in the south. Toledo had a better team last year with Kareem Hunt (K.C.Chiefs) but you beat them anyway. Motivation has much to do with college players and Toledo made the mistake of underestimating App. St. Toledo's success against Ark. State in previous years gave them a false sense of superiority against the Sun Belt teams.

Motivation should not be a problem this re-match for Toledo as they are now aware of App.St.'s ability. Miami of Florida and Ohio U. were able to exploit Toledo's major weekness (immobile Q.B.). If App. St. can do the same, they have a very good chance of winning.

We lost our best pass rusher to injury a couple weeks ago, hope the DL can step up pressure.

Oh and no one out of our conf should judge Ark St on OOC games, they for some reason can't win them.

Interesting to hear you say they were better last year. I've been wondering whether this year's team is actually better, or just about the same but didn't have to deal with a top 15 WMU team.

Funny how many teams keep "underestimating" little ol' App State.

Begs the question. Are we better than last year?

I would say that we are not. We had more proven healthy playmakers on offense at this time last year and our defense wasn't as bang up, was deeper, and I believe had the statistical edge in most categories.

For most of the season, we were clearly worse than the last two years. In the last couple games, I think we’ve gotten back to that level. So it depends on which team you think is more likely to show up in Mobile.

I would have agreed with you until the past few weeks, but we really stepped up. If we can get/keep our RBs healthy then this team is very good.

Thanks for stopping by. I've seen the stats that indicate your QB isn't the best rusher in the world. Hopefully, our injury riddled D can still get to him. We'll just have to wait and see. I can see the game getting tough for us if our secondary plays Swiss cheese coverage as we saw from time to time this season.

I'm sure there will be plenty of motivation on both sides. It would be sweet to get another win against the MAC. :D

See you in Mobile!

I enjoy seeing the top teams from the group of five conferences play each other. The game was close last year and this re-match looks to be the same. I have no desire to see Toledo get clobbered by Clemson or Oklahoma but will enjoy watching these two group of five teams slug it out for bragging rights.

The best of the MAC vs the best of the Sun Belt. How cool is that?

Were we worse than last year or just seriously depleted by injuries? I think/hope the last 3 weeks showed we are a very good team still.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

I think we are a completely different team now than we were at the beginning of the year. The run game and offensive line has been a major factor in the turnaround.

We had more talent last year. We played better last year. We also had fewer injuries last year.

Last game the team looked great and I think that is the team that shows up in Mobile.

I think Toledo's best pass rusher may be suspended for at least the 1st half. Maybe Rocketman can elaborate.

In looking at all the available info, I think Toledo's cfp playoff ranking may be a bit inflated based upon their 10-2 record. Their strength of schedule is one point below ours (we are 120 and they are 121), and besides Miami, their non-conference opponents were FCS Elon, and Nevada (3-9) and Tulsa (2-10). Now, they played to their potential for most of the season and only had the questionable loss to Ohio, where we struggled early and mid season with chemistry and injuries. But we have finished the season strong and playing the way we all thought we would play the whole season.

We are going to have to come in and blue collar work hard, but I am liking our chances in this game.

Having a kicker that can actually score points has been a huge boost in confidence for our guys. They now know if they can't convert the 3rd down we have a high chance of still walking away with 3.

i think at this point in the season we are better than last year. 8 first team sunbelt indicates better. QB should be slightly better and RB is healthier. Cox was dinged up end of last year, Jalin seems to be ready. Special teams has come together, missing Sims hurts but otherwise D looks stout.
