QB next year
Made it to 2 home games and 2 road games this season - very proud of what we’ve done and excited about the momentum for the future. Didn’t see anyone else take a snap in person and not until the last series of the bowl game, except for Taylor Lamb. Does Zac Thomas have the job or is there competition at this point? Happy 2018...Go APP

Competition will be wide open among four candidates in the spring (and probably beyond).

Agree with that! In fact, I'll put my chips down on "beyond." It's a long, long time until Sat., Sept. 1.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 12:02 amCompetition will be wide open among four candidates in the spring (and probably beyond).
If it happens to the Apps, it happens to me!
Re: QB next year
One player vying for the starting QB position will be new recruit Stephon Brown from Glenn High School. 6'5" 220 lbs. He had 2790 yards passing and 43 TDs this season. Plus 840 yards rushing.

The winner gets their first start against Penn State...not an easy start to a career!

Betting Brown gets a redshirt. He's got a lot to learn. Zac Thomas will win the competition.

Re: QB next year
I think Thomas will get the start b/c he has been in the system the longest and has the most experience. Brown might get a red shirt but I think he is coming in this spring and depending on how well he plays and what Satt thinks our realistic outcome for the season will determine Browns playing status.
The Penn State game could be a repeat of the 2006 NC State game or Thomas could come out and ball and it could look like 2007. Satt has shown this program can develop players.
Also seeing how Satt handled the Rubino/Staton situation this year I have a feeling that whoever wins the job Satt will stick with them for a bit.

Re: QB next year
Also, as we’ve seen in past years, just because you’re starting the first game doesn’t mean you’ll keep the job all year. We’ve had a couple freshman QBs move into the starting job after a couple games and go on to pretty good careers.

Re: QB next year
If it's a tight race and there is little separation between the three, I think you have to go with Brown. One of the other two would have to be significantly better than Brown for him not to start. I could see maybe starting one of the other two with a very short leash. The NC State game mentioned above comes to mind, as well as the 2nd Michigan game.

Re: QB next year
I believe Taylor was a redshirt freshman. Brown may be the answer, but in the short run I would think one of the incumbent QBs would likely be the eventual starter come September. It wouldn't be unprecedented for Brown to win the job but history seems to suggest later rather than sooner. I also think we may be selling those already on the roster short at this point.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:19 amAlso, as we’ve seen in past years, just because you’re starting the first game doesn’t mean you’ll keep the job all year. Re: QB next year
Also, according to rumors I've seen on here, Brown was getting contacted by several P5 schools but remained committed to App. I have a hard time believing he would agree to come here to redshirt his first year and forgoing P5 opportunities.

Re: QB next year
What he said! I wouldn't be surprised to see one QB in the opener but a change during the season. I think we are fortunate to have some depth at the position, but unfortunately we really haven't seen much in game situations from any of them. On paper, Brown seems to have the biggest up side, but there is plenty to like in all three of the others. It should be interesting. I think Brown will get the red shirt if we are getting production from someone else. Depth is generally a good problem to have, but I hope someone emerges early enough to develop some chemistry / timing during fall camp.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:19 amAlso, as we’ve seen in past years, just because you’re starting the first game doesn’t mean you’ll keep the job all year. Re: QB next year
Since it was mentioned earlier , Brown did not have a good shrine bowl performance. He looked a step slow decision making wise. The ECU comit however looked like Roman Gabriel. (Google it)Thomas and Huseman both seemed very CC and C in their limited time on the field. Derrick , I have no idea. The issue may not be settled well into the season but Scott has said that we can win with either of the RSF,soon to be RSS. If we can put together a strong O line , he is no doubt correct.

Re: QB next year
I could see us running a 2-QB system for a while until one emerges; similar to Kam and Taylor several years back.
Also, keep in mind we should have the luxury next year of a stable of running backs and strong WRs (for high percentage quick passes). This should help take some pressure off the new QB. When Taylor took over we had a young Cox and that was about it.

I thought Bobo, McElfresh and Malachi were a pretty good seasoned group.boonetown1 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:47 amI could see us running a 2-QB system for a while until one emerges; similar to Kam and Taylor several years back.

He was; I was alluding to both freshman QBs on next year’s roster.hapapp wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:30 amI believe Taylor was a redshirt freshman. If anyone’s getting overlooked I’d say it’s Derrick. Seems much of the discussion is framed as Brown vs. the two sophs.
I honestly have no idea who will eventually win the job. None of the four would shock me.
