App State Ice Hockey

Unread post by ShagNC » Sat Jan 13, 2018 5:13 pm

Does anyone know if App still has a program? When I was there, it was dwindling-probably because you had to commute to Charlotte for ice time....at 2 in the morning.

I've always wondered why the proper equipment for maintaining an ice rink was never installed in Holmes. I'm sure cost was a part of this decision, but seeing how Boone and The High Country have grown in general, I believe the area would benefit from an indoor ice facility.

There used to be an indoor rink and team back when a " tablet "was actually stone.Or shortly thereafter.

There is a hockey club team. Their Facebook page is listed as Appalachian State Ice Hockey.

It would not be smart right now due to finances, but I would like, at some point, to see a Varsity Hockey team at App. If any school in the Carolinas should have Hockey it is us. I have even mentioned this to DG.

Just my opinion but a hockey team would be a major drain on the athletic department budget and would generate little interest.

Akin to our current basketball team.

NC State has a very good program. There have been talks about going D1, however I don't see that coming to fruition any time soon. North Carolina and Virginia have very good club hockey teams, which draw a ton of interest: Liberty, UVa, VaTech, and UNCW all have awesome programs. Hell, Liberty has 3 ACHA teams, D1 D2 and D3 and they're all ranked. Why can't we?

For one reason would be Title IX requirements. We would need to add some scholarships to women’s sports to compensate for the added Hockey ships.

Women's hockey. Drop men's hoops and add it. Two birds, one stone .

I will drive from Raleigh for an occasional hockey weekend but not so for basketball.

I love hockey, and think it would be cool for App to have a team if feasible, but no way should dropping men's basketball even casually be considered.

DG played collegiate hockey. If anyone knows if it will ever work in Boone, it would be him.

I had no idea! I wonder what his thoughts are on all of this?

I just think it would be great if we could pull off a winter classic game at Kidd Brewer, with the Hurricanes as the home team!

There's a chance we could get a Stadium Series game. I'd say the chance at a Winter Classic is slim to none. But there's no reason for them to go across the state to host it. If/When they get a game it will be hosted at Carter Finley. Mainly because it just makes too much sense but also because it won't cost the organization hardly anything since it is literally next door to the stadium.

Besides, Boone doesn't have the hotel capacity to host 2 pro teams.

I agree it would be expensive and not practical to add any time soon (let's revive the basketball program first) But I don't know about little interest. Hockey can be hard to follow on TV but in person, its a blast!

I had a Canadian teacher for a product design class in high school. The first assignment we ever had was to come up with solutions for "Southern hockey fans who can't follow the puck on TV."

He really let his maple leaf patriotism shine through.

Baseball is my first love and love to watch all kinds of sports. But I will say that NHL Hockey is the best sport to witness live.
