Re: UCLA transfer
Covering it in the Lodge in the 2019 Commits section. Still getting confirmation on everything and he would have to sit a year so it would be as though he was a 2019 commit. Which is why I put it there. Also his brother Miller Gibbs is a PWO TE/WR for the 2018 class and is listed on the App site.

Re: UCLA transfer
Good lineage. Had offers but walked on at UCLA. Long way from home out there. Thinking he would have four years. We were deep at QB, now even more so.

Re: UCLA transfer
What's the NCAA's reason for making transfers sit out a year? Does App have to burn a scholarship for him just to sit out a year?

Re: UCLA transfer
The NCAA has always made transfers sit and their reasons have been to let a student athlete get accustomed to the new school without having the burden of athletics come into play immediately. Really it's to make kids think twice about leaving. Things are moving towards another direction with some of the new rules coming out about transfers not having to sit with a coaching change but for now you still have to sit.
As far as a scholarship, normally you would have to use one but given he's a NC kid (in state tuition), who his father and grandfather are, and that his brother is walking on here this fall I would not be surprised if we discussed our limited scholarships this year and the family is paying for his tuition for his down year. He could also be walking on so he can be with his brother. Lots of things can be happening here. I am working on getting all the info and details confirmed.
We were planning to take a QB for 2019 but so far no one has leaped ahead of the pack. This weekend's camp was going to be the first chance to go hands on with the group.

Re: UCLA transfer
He had offers from Michigan, Ole Miss, and Maryland. Is that right? His 24/7 page doesn't show his positional rank. Little confused on how good he is, anyone with some local insight; are we looking at our 2019 starting QB?

Re: UCLA transfer
I wonder if this is a domino that will make others fall. I know nothing about this situation. Maybe this is non football related, but it is interesting for him to transfer to a school that already has 4 young QBs on the roster.

Well duh. I wasn’t questioning the obvious. Just wondering out loud if there is more to this.

Re: UCLA transfer
Given he made the Dean's List both semesters at UCLA then academics are ruled out. I haven't had a chance to discuss this with anyone in depth yet given we have two big camps this weekend so our staff is busy but if you want a first take, he was buried on the depth chart there anyway and also 2,500 miles from home. We had contact with him during the recruiting cycle for the 2017 class (so he knows the staff) and add that to the fact that his brother is coming here. There really doesn't need to be much more. As far as any possible domino's I'm addressing that in the Lodge thread.

Hopefully, Grandpa Joe will make appearances at the Rock. That would be cool and good pub.

I wasn’t questioning any issues with him. Happy to have him. Just seems like there are better situations for playing time given our current situation under center.firemoose wrote: ↑Sat Jun 09, 2018 5:27 pmGiven he made the Dean's List both semesters at UCLA then academics are ruled out. Re: UCLA transfer
Does anyone know if you can practice with the team (all aspects aka practice squad) while sitting out the transfer year. That would be a huge benefit to Gibbs and program even though he is not playing in games.

Re: UCLA transfer
Yes. You have access to all aspects of the program and can do everything but play in an actual game. Corey Sutton was the example from last year and we saw the results both in spring ball and from the comments from Duck and Hayes about trying to cover him when working against the practice squad.
