Re: Early: possible replacements?
Quite honestly I'm glad we haven't heard very many solid rumors about potential candidates. Would I like to know who we're talking to - YES. But, it seems the more public the search is, the farther down your list you go before someone says yes.

Re: Early: possible replacements?
If our experience is any indication, I’d expect to be frustrated by a lack of official information being put out, and expect a lot of effort in maintaining secrecy. A lot of guys-even if they have permission to interview-don’t want their name out there so as to keep their own fanbase calm and don’t want to end up being identified as “the guy who didn’t get the job”. Anything you hear will probably be from people on this board with inside connections of varying reliability -that’s where Footballscoop.com gets most of their ‘reports’. Most of the logical candidates that you guys think are worth a call are likely the ones that will get a call, plus a few others that might not be as obvious. Y’all think I was kidding about flight awareAppSt94 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 10:38 amDG has been pretty quiet on the process but I am sure that he is working on it.Boroneer10 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 10:33 amHas anyone heard anything about Horton? Has an interview been scheduled?

On another note, someone mentioned Houston Nutt . . . I think it’s a commonly held belief that he’s expressed interest in pretty much every job that’s come open over the last several years. He supposedly called us both times. Not sure why, but for some reason he apparently doesn’t get called back much.

WSJ Reporting that Ponce and Brown will be two assistants leaving App State to join Satt in Louisville. Did not indicate whether they will be leaving immediately.

Let’s go get woody back from GT.
We need to hang on to Clark and holt and Ivey. If we could pull that off, I would feel good, but something tells me at least a couple of those are gone after the bowl

Depending on who GT hires, good chance he sticks there. If you give him better players there, he’ll be able to build a solid D.

Re: Early: possible replacements?
True, and it is a long shot to get him back here, but it’s a gamble. Maybe the new coach wants his own guy or A Different defense scheme, then he is out of a job.
Watts and holt are the 2 guys I really hope we can somehow hang on to. But as much emphasis as Scott put in our special teams this year, my guess is he takes them both.

Find a coach that is passionate about our special place. Keep the schedule and playbook. Keep early spring practice and 5 months straight of S&C. Keep the recruiting system to identify, evaluate and recruit quality character ball players. Choose speed over size, bet on players that will give their all. Look for assistant coaches that will do more than is expected. Heck, I think I could do it if surrounded by caring people. We are in a good position.
I would hope DG wouldn’t hire someone who would purposely F it up just to “make it their own.”

NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 9:53 amYou mean all the O linemen that went to the NFL under his guidance? Also, that was part of our transition from an FCS roster to FBS and he would have no control over the depth at that point. He had one of the top ranked offensive lines in the FBS and has continued that success at NC State. I will agree, though, that Clark is a great O line coach as well.
Here's a good article regarding both Clark and Ledford.
https://www.journalnow.com/sports/asu/f ... 04997.html
Go back and look at our OL recruiting classes from 2014 and 2015. Other than Vic Johnson and (eventually) Chandler Greer, they were a train wreck. Ledford signed and developed an absolute home run class in 2013, and we were able to ride it long enough to cover for the bad recruiting afterward.
He's a good coach, he just simply was too rigid in what he was looking for in OL.
With that said, that doesn't mean he couldn't be a good HC here. I'm not sure if he's my top choice, but I think he's in the top group for me.

What’s to stop woody from using app as a stepping stone to the first dumpster fire P5 that calls? The Rock wrote: ↑Wed Dec 05, 2018 9:32 pmhttps://www.journalnow.com/sports/asu/s ... 397c0.html

2) that’s the reality we are in, my friend.if a coach does well, he will get better offers and most likely leave.
If he doesn’t do well, we don’t want him. Satterfield stayed a little longer than most because he actually liked the area and the school.
We can’t compete with $20 million contracts. This is the reality of successful football at this level.
My question to you is: are we supposed to hire someone no one else wants? And how do you suggest we keep great coaches around at our price point?

Re: Early: possible replacements?
I believe that hiring someone that is going to stay 4+ years should be the least important search criteria. I want someone that is going to do so well in the next 2-3 years, that he will not be able to refuse the offer that comes his way. I just hope that DG negotiates a higher buyout this time around to help pay the next round of coaches.

Re: Early: possible replacements?
What is wrong with being a best stepping stone to the P5 level. We want continued excellence. We want to win conference championships and bowl games. We have a winning tradition. We want that to continue. Our team is consistently out performing our competition since moving up.
As long as we continue to win....we can expect that we will have a coach for 3-5 years before the big boys come calling with the bag of cash $$$. Mediocrity is the only way we keep a coach for longer at the G5 level.
APP STATE is NOT MEDIOCRE.
The only way to change the calculus is to support the YOSEF CLUB.
