Playoff expansion coming??
Ed Hardin, sports columnist with the Greensboro News and Record thinks the committee is ready for an 8 team playoff soon and then followed by 16. In a few years we could be back in the world of football playoffs!!

Re: Playoff expansion coming??
Interesting idea that playoff expansion would eventually kill the CCG for the P5. This would place more importance on a stronger regular season schedule (which has already started in some cases) and could lead to a snowball where P5-G5 matchups begin to decline, but I do think P5-FCS would disappear long before P5s stop scheduling us.

Re: Playoff expansion coming??
Last I heard playoff expansion was not on the meeting agenda for them in January. So I don't think it will be in the next year or so. If expansion does happen to take place to 8 teams we could get in one day as the top G5 team. That would be crazy wild.

I like how this article laid out the possibilities of expansion:

Re: Playoff expansion coming??
I don't see this causing P5-G5 matchups to decline. With the current format, you already see teams with a loss getting in so, in an 8-16 team format, the majority of teams would have 1-2 losses. Basically, it would be more important for a team to go undefeated than to have a really strong OOC schedule while losing a game. Furthermore, you already saw people saying Penn State's win against us was considered a good win since we were better than most of their conference wins. Maybe this puts a premium on strong G5 matchups and increases the payout?JonW wrote: ↑Fri Dec 21, 2018 8:42 amInteresting idea that playoff expansion would eventually kill the CCG for the P5. Re: Playoff expansion coming??
It's awesome that our name is being used along with Boise as a disruption to the current format. We all said we wanted to be the next Boise but didn't expect it to be happening so soon (although we still have a ways to go)!Apple@chin1 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 21, 2018 9:52 amI like how this article laid out the possibilities of expansion:

I don't see the possibility of a G5 conference becoming stronger than a P5 conference as concern. It is unlikely to happen anytime soon and any realignment would likely trigger a reevaluation of the format anyway and they could change the rules at that point. No need to try to "future proof" the format.

I think the conference relegation, not realignment, is an awesome format. It works in professional soccer overseas. I'd love to see it used in college football. That would be a great day for App State!

Re: Playoff expansion coming??
I my mind an 8 team playoff with a top G5 guarantee bid would stop conference realignment and give us a good shot a at least getting in the playoff with continued success. It is an exciting prospect. Stay in Sunbelt and continue to rule the roost. Just have to start winning the P5 match up each year.

Now, that would make for a very Merry Christmas!! Re: Playoff expansion coming??
Can you imagine what it would do for our program if we made an 8 team playoff? We're clearly one of the top 3 to 5 G5 teams so what a great thing to tell a recruit...go to UL or UNC and sit on the bench, or come to App and play for a national championship!

Re: Playoff expansion coming??
If it happens, the experts say that 2020 would be the year that it happens. If that comes to fruition, we should be one of the top G5 teams in the country (if not the best). Meteoric rise would be the only explanation for how we could end up in the first ever 8 team playoff after only 7 years in FBS!

Re: Playoff expansion coming??
The answer is 12 teams. 10 auto bids, 2 at larges. Seeds 5 thru 8 host seeds 9 thru 12 the first week of bowls. (Or you could use weekend 1 bowls such as Cure and New Orleans); Qtr finals (round of 8) played between either weekend before or after Christmas (playing after Christmas preserves the NY6 bowls for the Qtrs). Semis plays the following week. Take a week off and play the finals end of January. I for one would have loved to see App take on UCF in the 7-10 game.

Re: Playoff expansion coming??
G5 ain't getting a piece of any playoff pie, unless there is a G5 playoff.
If you are a P5 fan, then the result of an 8 team playoff, would cheapen the P5 regular season. Instead of focusing on #5-7 teams that got left out for whatever reason it'll shift to #9-11 along with the CCG being eliminated. If you are a G5 proponent, still loooong odds of any 1 G5 making it, with G5 schedules being weak in the scheme of things. The committee is there to look after their own and will slant the table their way.

That would be a huge historical first for App! This young team of ours would be seniors and juniors and we should definitely be in the running as the top G5!! I'm getting excited.Apple@chin1 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 21, 2018 1:22 pmIf it happens, the experts say that 2020 would be the year that it happens. If they don't provide a path of some kind for half of Div I football to make the playoffs then they're going to keep hearing from the likes of the UCFs, and us maybe starting next season, that it's not a real championship title.Black Saturday wrote: ↑Fri Dec 21, 2018 2:00 pmG5 ain't getting a piece of any playoff pie, unless there is a G5 playoff.

Re: Playoff expansion coming??
I would like to see the CCG’s represent the 1st round. That’s 20 teams right there. To account for ND and other independents, create a “play-in” game or 2 that pits them against at-large teams the same week of CCG’s. Bam! 24 team playoff and all have legit access.
After round 1, all teams are seeded.

Re: Playoff expansion coming??
No way a formal relegation happens in college football. There’s too much money to be made at the top to risk it. Tennessee, Texas, and UNC have all had mediocre seasons in the past couple of years that could have dropped them down, and if you think schools like that would ever take a chance that they would end up in “FCS”, then pass the pipe.
Fact is, App has a legitimate avenue to a NY6 bowl. There can be no mistakes along the way, no slip up, no off night - but it can happen. However, I believe it is next to impossible to make the actual playoff as it stands now. Nor do I think we would ever be in a position to have a legitimate beef about it, based on team strength. I believe this program can grow into a perineal conference champion, and a significant disrupter, but a top 4 playoff team just appears out of reach to me. And I’m ok with that right now. It’s not the ideal, but it is the world in which we live and play.

Re: Playoff expansion coming??
I feel an 8-team playoff would require getting rid of FBS conference title games. And the only way that happens is if the money made from an 8-team playoff dwarfs the CCG money, especially for the SEC.
