Top 25 Preseason Ranking for 2019?

Unread post by Rick83 » Tue Jan 01, 2019 10:39 pm

So, we're going to be close to, if not in, the final top 25 ranking for 2018, and I'm only referring to the AP poll here. Assuming we don't have any more players transfer out, what are our chances for starting the 2019 season ranked? And if we're not ranked preseason, at what point would be be ranked? If we go undefeated through the UNC game on Sept 21st?
My guess is that we'll be 25th preseason and will move up throughout the season as we take down opponents including the Tar Heels and the Gamecocks...we'll in essence be challenging UCF as the top G5 team in the country...assuming we stay healthy in key positions.

Unlikely. AP and Coaches will fall in love with teams like USC, Missouri, and Michigan State before we get a look. First realistic opportunity would be if we left Chapel Hill with a 3-0 record.

It won't happen. New coach, losing a few important players/leaders, and being in a bad conference will all be reasons why we won't be. We'll have to earn it. Honestly, with how bad UNC is we could beat them and still not be ranked. Depends on how they start the year off but don't expect many people (other than here in NC) to be excited about a win over UNC.

We won't be ranked in preseason but should be among the top 3-6 teams in receiving votes and if we reach 3-0 or 4-0 we should be ranked then. No matter where we start if we just win and keep winning we will be ranked and stay ranked as long as we are undefeated and look good doing it.

We've been a fixture in the "also receiving votes" area this year. If we know anything it's that the voters follow old habits by giving credit to teams that have a history. So now that we've started receiving votes it's easier for voters to write our name down again. I imagine that we'll be in the 30-35 range of "also receiving votes" in the preseason Coaches poll and 35-40 in the AP. The Coaches poll seems to be friendlier to G5 teams earlier in the season. I imagine that if we see the typical upheaval with the brand-name teams early on then we'll be ranked if we're undefeated after the UNC game.

Maybe if nothing had changed, all the turnover will keep that out of the possible realm.

Right now, I’d rather see Neal Brown in different colors.

I disagree. Being ranked all year is much better than just in the final poll and will likely result in a higher (numerically lower) final poll

The longer App is ranked during the season, the more the brand grows. Every top 25 team gets their game highlights shown on the recap shows (or mostly), which is beneficial. I want App to be ranked all day, every day.

Well yes , of course, but that's not where we are as a program.Yet.I want to be in the playoff and beat Alabama for the title. But realistically , anytime in the near future ,end the year in the top 25 or perhaps top 20 ,would be a huge accomplishment.

The Sun Belt is nearly on par with the MWC, having three 10 win teams. I wouldn't say the Sun Belt is a bad conference and neither would the statistics.

Join a better conference....one with tough competition every week and then think about being ranked. Delusional to think that App will ever sustain a ranking in the Top 25 with the Boone market and Sun Belt Conference.

We have helped to elevate the Sun Belt from where it was...and we've always been a little delusional like when we took your Volunteers to OT only to lose due to your lucky fumble recovery in the end zone...not to mention our gifts of missing FG and PAT. Also delusional to think we could go up to Penn State and do virtually the same thing with a first time starting QB. We're gonna keep that kind of delusion going in Boone...

If anyone would be familiar with delusion, it would be a UT-K fan.

We don't need you to tell us what can aspire to.

Keep living in the past, those Payton Manning years were great. Must be difficult finishing behind traditional football powerhouses like Kentucky and Vanderbilt in the SEC East.

You are very right. We can get in there but the only way to really sustain is either go to a better league or be undefeated every year, with a P5 win included. SBC is not good enough to have losses and still be ranked. 99% of our fans who think we SHOULD be ranked right now would not feel that way if we were still in FCS and we were debating on Georgia Southern or Coastal Carolina with our same resume. We needed to go undefeated to sustain a ranking.

What she said is not wrong. If Tennessee is 9-3 with losses to UGA, Alabama, and LSU and wins over 2 ranked teams while we are 12-2 with a loss to unranked SBC team, no P5 wins, and our best win being over the 50th team in computer rankings and no wins over a ranked or RV team then who do you think WILL BE and who SHOULD BE ranked? The answer to both is Tennessee. Being in a P5 they get opportunities to play better teams.

We can aspire to be whatever we want and nobody has a right to tell us not to aspire but we also have to live in reality and the reality is that we must sweep the SBC and beat P5 teams if we want to be ranked. Otherwise, we can't really be upset by it. If we went 13-0 in any P5 league we would be ranked in the top 3 in the country for sure but coming from the SBC the best we could hope for next year at 13-0 would be 15-20 range, and I would be unsure if that is legit if South Carolina and UNC both turns out to be 3-5 win teams. I'm really hoping we go undefeated and one or both of them wins 7-9 games so we know we beat a good team. I also hope Troy has a big year and pulls some upset so if we beat them it is considered a good win.

The SBC is a solid G5 league but overall in FBS the only leagues behind us are the MAC and CUSA and if App and Ga Sou left the SBC for any of them the pecking order would tilt toward them.

We have raised the profile of the SBC and we can certainly keep getting better but I read her post as a point that for us to truly be ranked with a 11-2 record we need a better league. Right now because of the lack of respect for the SBC we are banking on losses of other teams to get ranked. Even if we had beat Georgia Southern we would still depend on results of others to move past the 20-25 range. As of now I consider just being ranked 25 or receiving votes as a big accomplishment. We are never ranked among top 50 recruiting classes so the fact we even deserve and get any votes is a miracle. We must be ranked teams to get respect.
