I was afraid that Iowa win would hurt.....dstreet01 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 05, 2019 7:52 amI'll only comment on the AP poll since it is the only one that matters.
4 of the teams ranked 18-25 in the last poll lost their bowl games to unranked teams, and of those 4 unranked winners, only 1 received votes in the last poll (Iowa with 4).
4 of the five unranked teams who received more votes than us in the last poll won their bowl games....one, Stanford, barely beat Pittsburgh...a 7-7 team who got no votes in the final poll. Another, NC State, got blown out by the number 21 team.
I see us at 26, with an outside chance at 25, in the final AP poll.

Unbelievable that Boise didn't drop out. Objectively, it would've been hard for me to leave App out, but this should be great motivation for the boys.

Re: Top 25 ranking?
I haven't looked at their schedule, but a big ten team with 5 losses in the top 25 when the big ten didnt' even have a rep in the CFP seems an anomaly. Similar feelings about a 4 loss team in the top 10.

9-5 Northwestern is a joke. I don’t care if they made it to the big 10 championship. They lost 5 games, including at home to Akron.

The hell of it with Boise St is they were likely to have been beaten by BC the way that game started out.

Re: Top 25 ranking?
On a positive note, we received the most top 25 votes out of any team in North Carolina and NC State wasn't even a close 2nd as they lost almost all votes ending up with only 2.

Re: Top 25 ranking?
A few thoughts.
1. Many of us said 26-28 range. I was thinking 27 but Miss State was punished more than I expected. Really thought they would only fall to 25.
2. Just like expected Utah, Missouri, and Iowa State all fall out.
3. Iowa, Northwestern, and Utah State all move in just like expected. Cincy was my pick if Miss State drops out and they did.
4. I really thought voters would leapfrog Stanford over us. Good to see they did not push Stanford ahead of us. Really believe we would beat them.
A couple projections on coaches poll based on what we have seen.
1. We definitely move ahead of Utah, Missouri, Iowa State, and NC State at the very least.
2. Miss State will be close. If they drop out we are 26. If they don't then we could be 27.
3. Iowa passes us.
4. Maybe coaches give us credit and put us past Cincinnati but not sure that happens.
GSU and Troy getting votes in AP makes me think that if that happens in the coaches that both polls are showing SBC East some respect. Gives me confidence that worst case we are 26-28 in preseason poll and if we make it to 3-0 that we will definitely be ranked in both polls as long as we look good in those 3 games.
To be honest I'm extremely happy we are not ranked. We have been heavily punished for the Georgia Southern game. This should be motivation for the team. With no top 10-15 team on our schedule our coaches and players likely feel they have to go undefeated to stay ranked and that's what we want.
I hope coaches snub as well. This could be great fuel to the fire this off-season. Hopefully we come out as a team on a mission in August.

Re: Top 25 ranking?
It's great to be a Mountaineer. Voters across the country not just the Southeast are giving us respect even after the GS loss. We were playing FCS football 5 years ago. We are the 26th best team in the country. We are on the door step. Outwork everyone this off season Apps, and kick the door down in 2019.
GIVE 'EM HELL APPS!

Re: Top 25 ranking?
I think the really positive thing to take from the poll is that 6 of the top 25 are not from the P5 . To me that makes the goal of a deserving App St. team being ranked in the future very likely.

Re: Top 25 ranking?
Not too long ago, we were competing against Elon, Samford and Wofford. FBS teams, we were told, were Apples and Oranges. Now, here we are, and in an Apples to Apples year-end ranking, we are AHEAD of: ALL NC Teams; All ACC teams except Clemson and Syracuse; and the following programs- Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, Miss. State, Stanford, Oregon, Wisconsin, Minnesota, USC, UCLA to name a few.
So, How do you like THEM Apples?
Let that sink in and tell me IT'S GREAT TO BE A MOUNTAINEER!!!!!
