Crazy Sun Belt Format
Crazy Sun Belt Format
So how high do you think the guys were, when they came up with the format for the Sun Belt basketball tournament ?
I am going to say 9.8 on a 1-10 Scale

Done to reward a good regular season and attempt to ensure the winner has the best chance at a higher NCAA seed.
I don’t have an issue with it. If you don’t like it try harder prior to March.

Re: Crazy Sun Belt Format
I think it’s a step forward. I’d almost prefer they just dropped the #9,10 seeds and had the second round game at they 5,6 campuses. It’d be more fun traveling to the tournament knowing you could show up Friday and leave Sunday night with a tournament bid.
Troy & South Alabama both lost today which helps our distant Sunbelt tournament hopes. It’s gonna come down to those last couple games against those two same teams. I think we stand a good shot at going 4-3 to finish season which probably gets us a home game in tourney.

The single, double, triple bye is brilliant said no one ever except the guy who wrote it down as a joke and still denies it was his idea. Maybe David Grady suggested this to the sunbelt as payback.ggasu wrote: ↑Wed Feb 13, 2019 8:51 pmSo how high do you think the guys were, when they came up with the format for the Sun Belt basketball tournament ?

Final is on ESPN 2 .... semi finals on espn+
And if the Triple Bye tournament format isn’t crazy enough...Next year, they unveil the “pod system” at the end of the year for the last three games of the regular season. ....pod system was a 10 out of 10 high as f night

Next season, the first three rounds of the tournament are at campus sites. Only the "Final Four" will be in NOLA, and it'll be at the NBA arena in downtown.

Among mid majors/one bid leagues you're likely to see more of these creative formats in an effort to protect regular season champs. It's fine for the ACC if the 5th place team wins the tourney because they'll send 8 to the Dance but anything less than the 1 or 2 seed from the Belt will garner a 16 seed.

Re: Crazy Sun Belt Format
I'm never really liked the fact that in basketball the regular season seems to go out the window when the tournament time comes. Yeah...I know....seeds, but putting everyone on the same footing makes no sense. There is actually a logic and a "reward" for the teams for performing during the season this way and the reward isn't limited to a couple of top teams. It's a little crazy looking on paper but I have no problem with it.

I like it as well. It rewards winning./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 14, 2019 11:07 amCall me crazy but, I personally like this format.
it's not impossible for a team to go all the way through if they get hot. Kemba Walker and UCONN had to win 5 straight in the 2011 Big East Tournament as a #9 seed (then, they won 6 more and won the National Title.
C-USA is bracketing their team (1-5, 6-10 and 11-14) for the final four games of the REGULAR season to try to improve strength of schedule at the top. The Sun Belt will adapt a similar pod system next year.
It's all about $$$. The farther teams go in the National Tournament, the more money that is made for the team and the conference. The more units (wins) a conference collects, the more money they are rewarded.
