Idk who you guys think we’re getting. Any of these would be fine hires. Not necessarily homeruns, but all 3 have solid resumes/accomplishments.AppHoops wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 10:14 amYikes.appgrad2010 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 9:34 amPer HoopDirt:
Early names at Appalachian State include Gardner-Webb head coach Tim Craft, Presbyterian head coach Dustin Kerns, and Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan.
All of these are Big South coaches which is interesting. Tim Craft would be my vote of the three listed. I'm not entirely sure why Dustin Kerns is a candidate.
Be interested to see who else comes up.

Do any of these have at least a .600 winning percentage a conference championship?

Hard to get to .6 as a young coach who has rebuilt a program that started behind the 8 ball. I'd say trending and championships is more important. Sustainability would be my main question.

Hoping DG has a big surprise up his sleeve. I know our history and our perceived limitations, but it’s a big world out there. Al McGuire was at freaking Belmont Abbey. Believing in our AD.

If we go Craft I wonder if he could somehow bring Jose Perez with him. He's going to be a hell of a player, well he actually already is. Would love to see the Bronx boy become an early leader of some of Craft's teams in Boone

Watching Wofford play Kentucky. Never thought I would say this....Terriers are coached up, they pass and move without the ball well. Most importantly, they hustle on defense. No reason with “right” coach at App, we could achieve similar results.

Wofford also actually invests in basketball. That new arena is incredible. Of course Jerry Richardson helped with that, but still....Appstate88 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2019 2:41 pmWatching Wofford play Kentucky. Not easily done w/o stirring up the natives and an NCAA investigation. The kid can seek a release for the purpose of seeking to transfer. That, too, could stir up the natives. Not certain how the new NCAA transfer regs would apply in a cozy, player-coach relationship like this.diehardapp18 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2019 11:41 amIf we go Craft I wonder if he could somehow bring Jose Perez with him. Remember people speculating about all kinds of this stuff after Satt left... and then there was zero to it? That sort of thing just isn’t commonly done.asu66 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2019 5:03 pmNot easily done w/o stirring up the natives and an NCAA investigation. Plus, just know if a coach does that on the way in, he’ll do the same on the way out.

Oh I realize it’s a complex and unlikely process. Just dreaming here. I remember Asheville players transferring to Arizona and other big places after strong FR seasons. He’s just an amazing playerasu66 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2019 5:03 pmNot easily done w/o stirring up the natives and an NCAA investigation. Listening to Bobby Cremins the other day and thinking we could use another guy like that. He said in the interview that NC guys didn’t want to come to Boone but NY guys didn’t care. Times have changed but changing the culture is poignant. If we can attract amazing football talent we can do the same with basketball.

Re: Men's Basketball Coaching Search
I haven't given up on a seasoned head coach from a little higher up the NCAA food chain than one of three guys from the Big South. That said, I trust DG. I hope he can lock in his first choice and have the new staff on the road before the Final Four.
Since we're stating opinions here, I think it would be bad karma to ask Jason Allison to ride herd on the team, keep them on course for a strong academic semester, keep the two signed recruits focused on next season in Black & Gold, and hang on to our two best unsigned prospects for '19 until the new coach is on the scene--then tell him to shove-off.
OTOH, if Jason has other, better options or just needs a change--so be it. Best wishes to him.

Goodman is pretty reliable about this type of thing. This seems more substantial than anything we had regarding the football search

Re: Men's Basketball Coaching Search
If it’s any names of the mentioned above, I’m ok with it. It may not be some sexy P5 hire that instantly energizes our fan base, but they all appear to be solid and proven HC at some level.
We have to understand our situation in BB is completely different than our FB situation, and not have quite the same expectations for this hire.
Not to say that the BB program doesn’t deserve the same respect, it just hasn’t got to that height... yet. Hopefully this new hire can finally get us to that level.

Re: Men's Basketball Coaching Search
I'd be delighted with any of those candidates, but I hope it's Jones or Craft. Multiple winning seasons for both, tourny bids, ect.
We are the 199th ranked basketball team in the country according to CBI. I'm not sure why anyone here would think this is currently an appealing destination. We should be excited for up and coming Big South coaches.

Re: Men's Basketball Coaching Search
I get they’re not flashy names but honestly with the current state of the program and apathy as a fan base these would all seem to be pretty solid hires.
