Thoughts on today's scrimmage?

Unread post by AppfaninCAALand » Sat Mar 30, 2019 7:10 pm

Can anyone who was there give their thoughts for those of us who couldn't make it? Any surprises look really good? Were they showing any new wrinkles? General thoughts? How "gamelike" was it?

We went under center on 2 plays that I can remember.

Punter got a scholarship midway through randomly announced over the big board and it was nice to see the team run from both sidelines to congratulate him.

It was very much a practice - not very game like - seemed like a decent crowd - it was very weird not seeing Owens in the end zone.

Read the write up on FB. Said that the offense was looking great. Running backs were impressive

Very hard to get an idea from a scrimmage, as always.
On the surface, I didn’t see anything really different looking than what we have done in the past, although I did hear that ZT said it (I assume playbook stuff) was much different this year.
The defense doesn’t have the appearance of the “roof effect” as some were worried. Seemed like the hard hitting, ball hawking, fast moving d it has been, but again, hard to really tell from what they did today

I saw a lot of speed on both aides of the ball. Zac had good protection. Defense ran to the ball. Special teams looked good. There were some plays under center. I am encouraged.

I mentioned on another similar thread. An inter squad scrimmage is a no win proposition. If the defense looks great we worry about the offense and vice-versa

Does anyone know about the guy in the white shirt with no number that ran the ball late in the scrimmage? I thought The defense looked hungry. We are still a little banged up on Oline. I thought Huesman looked good as backup. Kaleb Dawson impressed me.

They introduced Kerns and family, which was a nice touch. Highlight was the scholly announcement and team reaction. Saw a lot of athleticism as expected, but going full speed and holding back on hitting is necessary but awkward. Offense looked a little better than I expected, though Drink wisely kept the playbook closed. Virgil made a crazy open move and took it to the house. Kicking looked solid. Left feeling pretty good, although concerned about the two injuries.

Is he in Yosef?

I’d like to see DG or someone approach him. Google says he’s worth $60 mil.

New playbook? New coaching staff? No way!

Defense will be the same. Offense will be brand new. This much should've been expected by the hires that were made. The thing to watch will be how vanilla Drink leaves the offense this season with such a limited time with which to work on the offense. Fall Camp could help, but by most accounts with knowledge of his offenses, the details are far more intricate than anything that App had under Satterfied/Ponce/Ledford, particularly passing game concepts.

Have to hope that the offensive line is the strength of the offense because making full field reads is going to be an adjustment for all the QB's on the roster.

Did the offense huddle? or no huddle? How were the plays signaled in? Was there always a deep route? What about motion?

Mostly no huddle. Passes were all range. Peebles made a great sideline catch on a 35-40 yrd play. There was motion, at times two TEs in motion.

same signaling from previous years. 3 guys on sideline signaling, but instead of colored wristbands, they had bright colored shirts

That is until the new starting QB, DBG, gets to town, right??
