Saw this on the other forum too. I get the idea behind it, but making players donate in any sort of fashion defeats the purpose.

Is Napier seriously going to bench players for not donating? I'm sorry but that seems crazy. I much prefer the community service stuff our guys do and I don't know if that's required or merely encouraged. I would assume encouraged...

Good idea in theory. But you can't make them donate, especially since they're not paid.... (which is a whole other discussion we don't need to get into) But having school fees is different from "making someone donate"

You're "encouraged" to attend off-season workouts, so of course the players will see this "encouragement" as more than that, and Napier should know better.

Being "made" to make a donation makes it a fee, not a donation.

Some booster will probably step up and pay it for the players to stop the bad publicity so it will go away. Kind of a "back-door" way to get some $$$ into their athletic fund.

"All Ragin’ Cajun scholarship athletes on the football team will be urged to pay at least $50 to the school’s alumni association, The Advocate reported Wednesday. Walk-on athletes will not be required to make the donation, according to the newspaper."

The crappy part is the student athletes won't receive the priority points other donors would be receiving per rules

I mean, I'm pretty sure App "strongly encourages" their athletics department employees to pay. Seems like you would get somewhat blackballed if you chose to not give, regardless of level of employment. Never really understood places where they pay you and then ask for you to give some of it back. Strange concept.

I’m not sure a booster could pay for anything on behalf of a player.

I'm sure this will do wonders for ULA-LA's recruiting.

Sorry, I like the idea. I am old school in that i see the value of a college education and what the school is giving them for their efforts. I think it creates a sense of attachment to the University, not just the football program. Hopefully that carries over in the future for future donations.

You can teach them a lesson in supporting your school's athletic fund without requiring, urging, or suggesting a cash donation.

Yes, players receive a substantial gift in the form of a scholarship but they don't actually get money. It's like giving someone a $100,000 gift card that clearly states "NO CASH VALUE" on it, then saying "ok, now go break this and give me $50 cash back". You can't.

Napier said in a follow-up press conference that he'd pay any player's $50 if they couldn't. $50 x 85 scholarship players is $4,250. If the UL-L program is in such dire straits that they need to risk alienating players over $4,250 a year they're seriously in trouble.

Does ulala give FB players cost of attendance? That would be $200-300 per month in addition to scholarship. I do not see that being too far fetched to ask for a one time payment.

The AD just walked back the "mandatory" terms and said it was purely optional for all players.

How about anything in the $16 to $15 range?
