Let’s just hope that this was the wake up call that came at the perfect time and that we have the time and talent to correct it before it becomes a bigger issue.

I commented in the moose lodge about this, but the wake up call was answered today. I'm hearing good things in termsbof things being addressed. Rest easy tonight fellow Cabineers. Let's hope this thing gets turned around.

Can we delete this embarrassing thread that was created at the beginning of the second game of the season?

For the record, I am not in the Fire Roof camp either.
However, my biggest fear this year was losing our edge on defense. We had a Top 25 defense last year and ranked Top 15 in several categories.

My hope was that Roof and our defensive coaches would plug into our system vs. plugging our players into their system. That's what I don't see at this point. Two weeks is a lot of time to self examine, adjust and move forward. We'll see the results in Chapel Hill.
No coach in history wants to take a job where he's told what to do coming in. Whether it be by the HC, AD, or fan base. Every single coach ever hired puts their stamp on a program. Not the other way around.
That is a shitty stamp.... just saying

Not until we’re done hiring and firing the coaches that don’t hold up to the standards of YC! First day here?

There is no problem with this thread. It is a much needed vent session. Calling for Roof's head is absolutely justified. Reasonable minds will hear the chaos from the fans and will process and handle it correctly.

There is a reason Drink isn’t making Roof available for the presser this week. And I’m afraid we may see some in the transfer portal as soon as season is over if this continues.

The patience is thin because this isn’t supposed to be a rebuilding year. I think there is a lot of feeing that you have to strike while the iron is hot and there are a ton of pieces in place. Waiting for him to get his personnel essentially renders this season moot and that’s enormously frustrating to consider.
This sums it up perfectly. If we were in a rebuilding stage and had just hired a first time DC, this thread would not have been made. A lot of us see this as a golden age of sorts. Our program continues to grow and right now has made no signs of slowing down. But just one bad hire can throw the train off the tracks. A lot of us think this program can become Boise State east, but it is not easy to get there. What we've built I think has exceeded most of our wildest expectations, so maybe we're getting greedy. But as I mentioned above, sometimes just one horrendous move can ruin everything. We're at a point where we can't risk this, because if we do who knows how long it will take us to get to this point again. We're on the verge of being a perennial top 25 program that competes for NY6 bowls, but we'll never take that next step if we're going to give up 40+ points at home to UNC Charlotte.

For a lot of us, we saw Roof as a bad hire from the jump. When you say "he's never been good any where" that's really not much of an exaggeration. And he probably has the second most important role on our coaching staff. We just aren't a program that can really "give someone time" right now. Especially when that person has been given plenty of time throughout his career and continues to disappoint.

I agree wholeheartedly. But these coaches knew what they had and what was successful I think. Move some pieces and build off what was successful.
Ok, on this whole putting your stamp on it thing. We had a GREAT defense. If Drink or Roof came in saying I’m going to change this and make it better thats just arrogant or stupid. The only thing that would warrant a change in our defensive scheme would be if we no longer had the personnel to run the 3/4. We have the backers and the edge folks. The only way Drink or Roof can tell me that we need to get out of the 3/4 is to say we don’t have anyone who can hold the middle. And if we’re going to stay in the 3/4 leave how we run it alone. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I think if we can figure out how to work Roof's son into the starting lineup, things will fall into place. He could maybe take Fehr or Gaither's spot.

As a new post here, and an App grad, I also have Duke season tickets and sat through many Ted Roof, as head coach, games at Duke. If you want to know how Duke's Defense worked through those horrible years, look it up. 'nuf said. Deja vu!

Gotta say this guys, it’s wrong to bring Roof’s son into this.

Y’all need to read Ethan Joyce’s article. I agree with his assessment of the defense and Saturday’s game.

Some of y’all on here are embarrassing and down right ignorant. Everyone can have an opinion but damn...........

So let’s look at the numbers. Charlotte rushed for 240 yards on 41 carries. If you take away Lemays 58 yard run and Fingers 68 yard run, we held them to under 3 yards a carry. I infer from this that we don’t have a scheme problem but missed assignments. To the point made on the lack of adjustments on the slants, fair point, but you can only do so much. The game plan was probably stop the run and see if Reynolds could beat them. He played well enough to do it, with some nice dimes and he took advantage of our inexperienced corners. As a coach, you pick your poison and hope it doesn’t kill you.
Yeah let’s take away 58 and a 68 yard run up the middle ! It looks good now what the hell kind of post is this?
Take away an 87 and two special teams and we lost....
You can't just "take away" those scores without somehow giving us back the benefit of the possession. We very likely would have scored anyway since we did score on most possessions. Had those been sustained scores, we wouldn't have put our D back on the field and would have eaten more clock, so it might have actually been more one sided! You can't really play the "what if" games. I'm not suggesting we didn't want the points, but quick scores are a mixed blessing when the D is struggling.

The scary thing is that we clearly spent a lot of time in camp practicing this 4-3, pressure, man on the backend defense.

It’s not going to be easy to reverse course for Roof and teach a new scheme. Assuming he can even teach a different scheme.
